Middlesbrough had a strong transfer window last month as Michael Carrick conducted his first pieces of transfer business in charge of the club.

Boro brought in Dan Barlaser on a permanent deal from Rotherham United, while they also added Cameron Archer and Aaron Ramsey, both on loan from Aston Villa.

In terms of departures, Middlesbrough let Massimo Luongo join Ipswich Town on a free transfer, while they sold Duncan Watmore to league rivals Millwall and let Matthew Hoppe join Hibernian on loan for the rest of the campaign.

Despite the fact players were allowed to leave the Riverside Stadium in January, there still may be some members of the squad that are unhappy they didn’t depart as well.

Here, we have taken a look at two Middlesbrough players who may be disappointed not to have left in January…

Paddy McNair

McNair has been at Middlesbrough since the summer of 2018, when he joined from rivals Sunderland. In his four years at the club, he has made a total of 178 appearances, scoring 13 goals, and provided 15 assists.

The 27-year-old started eight of the club’s nine opening league games, but since Carrick’s arrival, the defender has only made four appearances, all coming in the last four games.

It was revealed by Football League Word, that Middlesbrough were open to offers for McNair in the January transfer window.

Since Carrick was appointed manager, the Boro boss has gone with a back four and has gone with Dael Fry and Darragh Lenihan as his centre-back pairing.

McNair still has a contract until the summer of 2024, so there is no rush for Boro to sell the defender, but he could be a player who was disappointed not to leave the club last month.

The defender did start the game against Watford at the weekend, but the 27-year-old will want to keep starting games and not just do it now and then.

Darnell Fisher

Darnell Fisher is probably a forgotten man at Riverside Stadium, as the defender has failed to make an appearance in the first team this season.

The 28-year-old joined Boro in the January transfer window of 2021 from league rivals Preston North End. But since arriving on Teesside, it’s been a terrible time for the defender.

Fisher has only played 12 games for Boro, and they all came in the 2020/21 season, when he joined the club.

The full-back’s contract expires at the end of this season, but considering he is way down the pecking order at the football club and obviously doesn’t feature in Carrick’s plans, he may be disappointed he didn’t get to move on this month.

However, he hasn't played enough football in the past year, and not many clubs will have expressed an interest in signing the defender. So it is likely the 28-year-old will have to wait until the summer to depart Middlesbrough.
