Stoke City ran out convincing 3-1 winners over fellow Championship strugglers Charlton Athletic on Saturday as Michael O'Neill's men leapfrogged the South Londoners into 20th place.

The result means that the Potters have now only lost one of their last five league outings as they seek to move clear of the relegation zone.

Goals from James McClean, Tom Ince and the impressive Nick Powell put the seal on what was a dominant performance at the Bet365 Stadium.

One man who deserves specific praise for his performance is Powell, as the 25-year-old put in one of his best showings since arriving from Wigan Athletic this summer.

Here, we break down the numbers of his weekend display and assess just how crucial Nick Powell is to Stoke City's survival hopes....

The former Manchester United man took his goal well for the Potters as he stabbed home Tommy Smith's well delivered cross to make the points safe in the 66th minute.

In addition to getting his name on the scoresheet, the 25-year-old also played a key role in the build up for Powell's goal as headed on a free kick from Sam Clucas into the Irishman's path.

The attacking midfielder was a constant menace throughout the 90 minutes, making a total of two key passes out of the 33 he registered during the contest, often dropping deep to link the play.

From an attacking perspective, Powell also provided strong support for Tyrese Campbell up top, winning a total of seven aerial duels, mostly in the final third of the pitch, thus making him a good outlet for long balls to be played too.

The player's link up play and willingness to get forward and support the lone striker makes him a crucial segment of Stoke's starting eleven as they seek to pull away from the drop zone.
