Barnsley moved out of the bottom yesterday afternoon with an excellently executed victory at fellow strugglers Birmingham City, with new boss Jose Morais getting his tactics spot on in the 2-0 win at St Andrew’s.

The Tykes were sensational and the three points will go a long way towards their survival, but with much of a third of the campaign remaining, the Portuguese boss will know his side still have a lot to do if they are to avoid the drop this term.

Morais will hope to end the season in the second tier, and will look to utilise the summer transfer window to assemble a squad capable of avoiding yet another relegation dogfight next semester.

The manager has a lot to do when his summer overhaul begins, and these deals could be just the start of his activities…

The Senegalese forward linked up with the Tykes from French side Dijon in the summer, but has struggled to adapt to the demands of the English game since crossing the Channel.

Just a single goal all season in almost twenty appearances, the striker’s doubters are on his back, and the player simply appears to have lost faith in his ability to contribute and find the back of the net.

Bagging eight goals whilst on loan with Clermont in Ligue 2 last year, Thiam has proven he has a knack for finding the goal, but his only strike this term came from the spot in the 3-1 win over Millwall back in September.

Some will hope the player is given another season, but if Morais is ruthless, Thiam must go.

With Andy Yiadom likely to leave on a free transfer when his contract expires in the summer, Morais will be forced into sourcing new full-backs, with Wiggins an excellent option given that his own deal with Bournemouth is coming to an end.

The 30-year-old has struggled to establish himself in the Cherries side in recent years given the form of the likes of Adam Smith, and will be seeking a new challenge in the summer with no signs of a new deal being offered by boss, Eddie Howe.

A solid defender who will thrive in the second tier, Wiggins would help to fill the void left by Yiadom and bolster the backline at Oakwell, and is a deal Morais should begin to explore soon, before others begin to catch wind of the player’s situation.

With the player’s contract at QPR set to expire in the summer, Perch is expected to be on the market, and Morais may consider offering the 32-year-old terms to link up with the Oakwell side.

The former Nottingham Forest man has bags of experience having also played for the likes of Wigan Athletic and Newcastle United, and his knowledge of the Football League will certainly appeal to the new boss.

The Tykes could be on a tight budget again should they suffer relegation, and free agents such as Perch could be the most effective method by which the side can be strengthened.

Coming back from injury, if the player can prove his fitness between now and the end of the season at QPR, he could attract serious interest from South Yorkshire.
