When Chris Coleman rolls into the car park for the first time at the Stadium of Light he will find a club with massive potential that has lost its way in recent years and one which is in need of some serious TLC.

Given the size of the infrastructure and fan base there is a certain expectation level from the Black Cats' faithful and the former Wales manager will hope that he is the man to put a smile back on some seriously miserable faces.

Coleman won't have a lot of time to assess his squad at this time of the year with the games coming thick and fast, but as with any new manager it seems likely that he will look to add to his squad when the transfer window reopens.

Despite languishing at the foot of the table just now, if the Black Cats can pick up a few decent results between now and the start of the transfer window then the club might look an attractive proposition for any potential new signings.

Football League World writer Lee Clarke looks at two players who would be solid first signings for Chris Coleman...

Chris Gunter

The Wales right-back is a sound Championship player and although he has spent many years at Reading the chance to reunite with Chris Coleman could be too hard to turn down.

The 28-year-old knows what it takes to be part of winning teams at Championship level following spells with the Royals and Nottingham Forest and his experience could be vital for the Black Cats.

Having recently penned new terms with Reading it could be difficult to tempt him up north but if Coleman can guarantee him some sort of success then it's a transfer worth pursuing.

Ben Woodburn

The Liverpool youngster was handed the chance to perform on the international stage by Chris Coleman and a loan move could be ideal for the 18-year-old come January.

Woodburn looks set for a bright future in the game and a loan spell away from Liverpool could do him the world of good, whilst offering him the chance to show people exactly what he is capable of by scoring regular goals in the second tier.

The Black Cats could do with a few more goals and someone of the youngster's capabilities would be a really shrewd signing by Coleman.
