It's been a promising start to the season for Blackburn Rovers.

Wednesday's 2-1 triumph over Millwall means it is now three wins on the bounce and six straight games unbeaten for Tony Mowbray's side, Rovers are now closing in on a Championship play-off place.

But while they will be desperate to maintain that push for promotion throughout the rest of the season, the sheer number of injury problems they are accumulating right now could well be a problem further down the line.

As a result, next month's transfer window could certainly be well timed for Rovers, although it they feel they do not have the finances available to do deals with others clubs in January after a busy summer, there is always the possibility of exploring the free agent market, something they would not have to wait until the turn of the year to do either.

With that in mind, we've taken a look here at two realistic free agents that Rovers could consider targeting to strengthen their squad should the need to do so arise.

Jazz Richards

One position where there is likely to be a fair amount of concern for Rovers at the minute, is right-back.

With Elliott Bennett and Joe Rankin-Costello already long term injury absentees, Ryan Nyambe is now the club's only recognised fit and available senior right-back, meaning an injury for the Namibian would be a huge blow for Rovers.

As a result, bringing in a right-back such as Richards - who has experience of both the Premier League and Championship - as cover in that position would go some way to easing their nerves on that side of defence, giving them a reliable option with which to rotate and protect Nyambe from injury while they wait for the like of Bennett and Rankin-Costello to get back to full fitness.

Matthias Ostrzolek

On the other side of their defence, with Barry Douglas' loan and Amari'i Bell's contract both expiring at the end of this season, left-back is a position Rovers may have to add in again sooner rather than later.

The Lancashire club have also placed an increased emphasis on European scouting and recruitment recently - something which look to have worked brilliantly with the arrival of new first-choice 'keeper Thomas Kaminski from Gent - and if they look to exploit that here, then Ostrzolek could be an option.

A free-agent having left Hannover in the summer, Ostrzolek has spent much of his career in the top two tiers of German football, also representing the country at Under 21 level. He therefore has the experience and potential to make an impact at Ewood Park, where there is currently a familiar face to the defender, in the shape of his former Hamburg teammate Lewis Holtby, something which could help him settle were a move to happen.
