Sheffield Wednesday were held to a 1-1 draw at Yorkshire rivals Barnsley on Saturday, in a result which means the Owls have now secured just one win in their last eight Championship matches.

Despite the frustration of not being able to end their recent poor run of form, which has seen Garry Monk’s side lose ground on the teams above them in the race for the top six, there were some positives to take from their encounter with Barnsley.

Those included Monk handing debuts to both Connor Wickham and Josh Windass, while Alessio Da Cruz was also handed his first start for the Owls, and the trio did manage to make some impression on the match, although there will still be plenty of work for them to do on the training ground to fully integrate into the side.

Windass in particular managed to show glimpses of the sort of ability he will bring to Sheffield Wednesday’s midfield for the rest of the campaign, having made the move from Wigan Athletic on loan for the rest of the season.

The attacking midfielder managed to mark his debut with the opening goal of the contest inside the opening 16 minutes, but it was a lead that the Owls ultimately failed to hold onto with Cameron Dawson guilty of making a real error with a poor clearance falling to the feet of Cauley Woodrow who brought the hosts level on 24 minutes.

That is how the game ended up finishing, suggesting that Monk still has plenty of work to do to get his side back to winning ways over the next few weeks, although he will take some encouragement from the performance of Windass.

QUIZ: How much do you know about Sheffield Wednesday’s January signings?

Here then, we take a look at Windass’ debut performance against Barnsley…

Windass was brought straight into the side by Monk in the number ten position behind fellow debutant Wickham against Barnsley, and the 26-year-old was given the full 96 minutes to show what he can bring to the side for the rest of the campaign, with the Owls hoping he can provide more creativity and goals from midfield.

The attacking midfielder certainly showed that he has the ability to add goals to the side from the number ten position against Barnsley, with Windass producing a composed finish from inside the penalty area with his first real sight on goal inside the 16th minute of the game – and that shows that he has the ability to convert chances when they fall his way.

Despite taking the lead early on at Oakwell, Sheffield Wednesday largely struggled to find much attacking fluency or rhythm for most of the game, although Windass did try and get the Owls on the front foot, making two dribbles and showing he does have the confidence to take opponents on in the last third.

However, Windass was not his best in possession, with the attacking midfielder only averaging a 62% passing accuracy, which is bellow his usual sort of standards on the ball, although that is to be somewhat expected considering that he is yet to really get to no the sorts of runs his team-mates make off the ball.

The 26-year-old, though, did manage to show signs of his passing range, managing to complete half of the long ball passes he attempted, which shows he could help the Owls switch the play at times when they have the chance to do so against their opponents.

Windass was also able to show he has the ability to press and win the ball back for the Owls in the opponents half of the field, with the Wigan loanee managing to make two interceptions against Barnsley, which shows he has the right sort of work rate in midfield.

Despite not being at his fluent best on the ball against Barnsley, Windass showed more than enough on his debut to suggest that he could become an important player for the Owls throughout the rest of the campaign.
