Reading were beaten by Wolves on penalties in the third round of the Carabao Cup on Wednesday evening.

The Royals fell behind in the first-half when Joao Virginia spilled Bruno Jordao's tame effort from distance, and that's how it stayed until injury-time in the second-half.

Relentless pressure from Jose Gomes' side saw them equalise in the ninth minute of stoppage-time as Lucas Boye headed home from close-range to send the visiting supporters into jubilant scenes.

That meant that the game went to penalties, and Virginia was unable to make up for his costly error earlier in the game as Wolves scored all of their spot-kicks.

John Swift and Lucas Boye missed for the Royals as the Premier League side progressed to the next round of the competition on the night.

Virginia is likely to find game time limited for the remainder of the season after yet another mistake, with Rafael likely to come back into the side for their game against Swansea City this weekend.

We look at TWO reasons why Everton are surely regretting loaning him to Reading this season.

Virginia isn't first-choice goalkeeper with the Royals

The Everton youngster was first-choice goalkeeper when he signed for the club, but after a shaky few performances during pre-season, Jose Gomes signed Rafael late into the summer transfer window.

Gomes stuck with Virginia though soon after, but with mistakes becoming a regular occurrence, it certainly hasn't come as a surprise to see him replaced by the former Napoli shot-stopper.

Everton won't have sent him out on loan to occupy a spot on the substitutes bench, and his development could take a hit if he isn't playing regularly in senior football.

He clearly isn't good enough for the Championship yet

Virginia is highly-rated by plenty of Everton supporters, and they will have been keeping a close-eye on his progress on loan with the Royals.

But after making a number of costly mistakes in his first loan spell in English football, it's clear to see that he isn't ready for Championship-standard football.

A loan move to a League One side will have been a better move for the youngster, who will be hoping that he be given another opportunity to impress Jose Gomes.
