With Aston Villa's hopes of a play-off finish seemingly over, Dean Smith may now be looking to prepare for the summer ahead of an overhaul at Villa Park.

The Villans have endured a difficult second half of the season, and currently sit eight points off the Sky Bet Championship play-off places after just one win in their last 10 league games.

Smith has tried to get his side playing the way that he wants, but ultimately, his attractive, attacking brand of football has been outweighed by his side's defensive frailties, and it wouldn't be surprising to see him strengthen his back-line in the summer.

The West Midlands side have already been linked with a move to sign Barnsley centre-half Liam Lindsay, and perhaps another option they could look to explore is Manchester United's Timothy Fosu-Mensah.

Villa were linked with the Red Devils defender back in January, and it looks as if the Dutchman's time at Old Trafford could now be over, with reports from The Sun claiming that he could be set for a move to Ajax after an underwhelming loan spell at Fulham.

Here, we take a look at two reasons why Villa need to join the race for Fosu-Mensah...

He is very versatile

One reason why Fosu-Mensah would be a perfect option for Dean Smith is because he is very versatile.

The 21-year-old is primarily a centre-half, but can also play at either right-back or as a holding midfielder, which would give the Villans some real depth.

Villa's defence has been very shaky this season and Fosu-Mensah can play in various different positions to help shore the side up.

He has real Premier League quality

Fosu-Mensah has endured a tough time on loan at Fulham and has been in and out of the first-team at Craven Cottage, but there is no denying how good of a player the Dutchman is.

The 21-year-old really impressed under Louis van Gaal at Old Trafford, and has real pedigree having represented the Dutch national team.

We have seen another Premier League outcast in Tyrone Mings become a fans' favourite since moving to Villa, and Fosu-Mensah could follow in his footsteps.
