Charlton Athletic fans have endured something of a roller-coaster season in the Championship.

Lee Bowyer and his Charlton side had fans smiling all across the country when they won the League One play-off final last season. The pair are meant for each other, and life back in the Championship couldn't have started any better.

Charlton looked like dark horses for a top-six spot after the first few games of the season, but now they're dark horses for an immediate return to League One.

Injuries quickly threw them down the Championship table and Charlton have never really recovered. The club saw its long-awaited takeover completed at the start of the year, but January didn't bring the signings that fans were hoping for.

Here we take a look at two Charlton players who need to up their game in the final few months of the season:

Ben Purrington

Purrington has been an ever-present member of the Charlton team this season. The 23-year-old has established himself as a competent Championship player, but the left-back's performances started to drop towards the New Year, and he's since found more time on the bench.

It's understandable that Purrington's effectiveness has dropped off a touch - he's still only 23 and he's playing in a Charlton side who are coming under increasing pressure as they near the bottom-three.

He'll no doubt get his chances to impress Bowyer once again, and maybe a rest is all he needed.

He's one of the few players that escaped any sort of long-term injury this season and has subsequently played a lot of football, but has started just one of the last four for Charlton, with Alfie Doughty filling in at left wing-back.

Tomer Hemed

The Israeli international joined for free in the summer, signing a one-year contract after being released by Brighton. He had a decent loan-spell at QPR last season where he netted seven league goals, but he's still waiting for his first at Charlton.

His season start was blighted by injury and fans didn't get a proper look at Hemed until later on. But he's playing a lot of football at the minute, and he's not yet proving his worth to Bowyer.

Nobody questions the 32-year-old's work-rate - he always gives everything and leaves it all on the pitch, but it seems like his Championship qualities as a striker are starting to dwindle.

He's been a prolific Championship striker in the past but perhaps Bowyer should move on from Hemed in the summer. He could end up staying if Lyle Taylor departs, and Charlton are struck for strikers, but Charlton will no doubt be spending some money in the summer, and Hemed will likely be out the door.
