Leeds United might be sitting in the lofty position of second in the Championship table, but that doesn’t tell the full story of how they have managed to maintain their promotion charge.

Marcelo Bielsa came in during the summer and overhauled the club regarding the training and philosophy on the pitch.

The style of play and tempo were altered to a high-press, fast approach ahead of the new season.

Initially, those alternations were paying dividends with Leeds storming to the top of the league and have since been fighting it out with their rivals to remain towards the top.

One problem that has blighted their assault on a place in the Premier League is injuries to their defensive unit.

Pontus Jansson and Gaetano Berardi have both been out inured on a couple of occasions this season with the latter still on the sidelines.

Jansson has returned but has seen Liam Cooper the most recent player to be ruled out through injury.

Luke Ayling remains a long-term absentee while Tom Pearce also remains in the treatment room.

Stuart Dallas is another player currently missing, and Barry Douglas has been out injured this term too.

At one point or another, the entire backline for Leeds has had some sort of injury to contend with, yet Bielsa’s men remain in the promotion hunt.

There is no doubt that Jansson and Cooper are Leeds’ main two centre-halves when fit and available, but with the January transfer window opening up soon, Bielsa could look to add to his defensive options to avoid a repeat of their injury problems.

With that said, here are two centre-half signings that could give the pair a run for their money at Leeds in the coming weeks and months.

A free agent and a former two-time Premier League winner, Robert Huth boasts a tremendous amount of experience both domestically and internationally.

Having played in Europe and for the German national team, he would be a player, should he join Leeds, that would be somewhat of a marquee signing heading into the final six months of the season.

Pontus Jansson and Liam Cooper are a fantastic pairing, but having Huth as an option to challenge for a place in the first team would be an option Marcelo Bielsa would be silly to pass up.

The Millwall defender has six assists this term and three goals to his name more than any other Leeds defender and the same number of assists as Pablo Hernandez.

His presence in both boxes would be a massive boost to Leeds’ promotion chances and at 23-years-old still has plenty of time ahead of him to improve.

Standing at six-foot-three-inches, Cooper is a giant is comfortable playing out from the defence as well as going long when needed.

He would certainly add another dimension to this current Leeds side and would run Pontus Jansson and Liam Cooper close in the race for a place in the starting XI.
