2 Birmingham City player dilemmas that Lee Bowyer has to weigh up pre-Boro

Published

on

Birmingham were in fine fettle in their last Championship game, finally getting a win on the board (and some goals to boot) in their 2-1 victory over Swansea.

It was the Blues first win since early in September – and they won’t want to wait as long for their next three points, with Lee Bowyer no doubt hoping they can make it six from six against Middlesbrough today.

However, Boro are certainly no pushovers and it will not be an easy task for Birmingham to follow up their previous victory with another here.

Lee Bowyer will also have some decisions to make in terms of team selection and decisions – so here are two that he will have to consider ahead of the game.

22 questions about Birmingham City away kits from over the years – Can you get full marks?

What colour was the clubs away kit in the 2009/10 season?

Does Jeremie Bela come straight back into the team?

Bela has had frequent minutes for Birmingham so far this season, featuring in 12 league games for the Blues so far this year and picking up three goal contributions along the way.

However, the 28-year-old last featured for Lee Bowyer’s side in their loss to the Baggies and didn’t play a part in the club’s win over Swansea due to injury.

The player though is back in contention, with the side confirming via their Twitter that he is back in training.

It begs the question then of whether Bowyer should really tinker much with a winning starting eleven and if Bela warrants an immediate return to the first-team.

He is certainly a threat for his side when pushing forward and has looked bright when he has featured (and he also knows how to score and tee up his teammates too).

The manager then will have a decision on his hands in terms of whether to throw the player straight back into the mix or let him perhaps make a cameo from the bench if his side are struggling in the game.

Who does he replace Ivan Sunjic with?

Lee Bowyer would ideally not have to drop Ivan Sunjic this week but with the club also confirming via their Twitter that the player hasn’t been in training, it means he is unlikely to play a part in the game against Middlesbrough.

The 25-year-old has been a mainstay in the lineup, so his absence is sure to be a blow for the Blues. With the midfielder completely out of action though, who should the boss replace the Croatian with?

Ryan Woods looks the most likely option, as the 27-year-old was often favoured alongside Sunjic until Gary Gardener came into the fold. However, there are a few other options that Lee Bowyer could choose from as he searches for another win and it might even result in him tweaking the tactics of his side slightly.

Either way, with the 25-year-old injured, Bowyer will have another key choice to make over who to throw into the mix for the Middlesbrough game.
