Barnsley have endured a challenging start to the Championship season with the Tykes having had to endure plenty of speculation over the future of Gerhardt Struber in the opening weeks of the campaign.

That seemed to affect their form in the first few games and Struber eventually left Oakwell having managed to pick up just one point from their opening four Championship matches. The Tykes then failed to win their following three matches leaving them winless in their first seven league matches.

Valerien Ismael has since come into the club and helped to transform their form on the field, managing to win three out of his first four Championship games in charge. That has lifted hopes that the Tykes could push up the table and enjoy a more comfortable season than they did last term.

Barnsley will now be facing a crucial January transfer window where they will be needing to back Ismael to bring in his own targets, as well as look to keep hold of a couple of the club’s most influential performers.

With that in mind, we take a look at TWO potential Barnsley players who could be eyeing up a January move away from Oakwell…

Alex Mowatt

One player who is always being linked with a potential move away from Barnsley is Alex Mowatt, with the attacking midfielder having established himself as one of the best performing players in his position in the league so far this term.

Quiz: Did these 17 Barnsley players ever actually score a league goal for the club?

Mowatt has so far this season managed to average 1.1 shots and 1.1 key passes per game for Barnsley in the Championship, as well as scoring two goals and providing one assist (Sofascore). The 25-year-old could therefore once again be a target for a couple of Championship clubs in January.

The midfielder might decide that the time is right to move on from Oakwell after helping the club to promotion from League One and then to establish themselves back in the English second-tier.

Aapo Halme

Another player who could potentially be open to a move away from the Tykes in January is defender Aapo Halme. The 22-year-old has so far this season only managed to make three substitute appearances for the Tykes in the league and has fallen down the pecking order in terms of starting centre-backs.

Hamle joined from Leeds United Barnsley with the aim of securing more regular first-team football, and he was a key performer for the Tykes last term making 32 Championship appearances. In that time he showed his qualities averaging 3.4 clearances and 1.4 tackles per game (Sofascore).

The defender has been used from the bench by Ismael so far, so much will depend on whether he feels he can get back into the starting line-up. If he feels he can not do that, then he may opt to make a move away in January.
