Barnsley are fighting for their lives this season in the Sky Bet Championship, with relegation under Gerhard Struber looking somewhat inevitable unless the Tykes can find some consistency.

They sit rock bottom of the Championship table with nine games to play, with Barnsley knowing they will have to muster up something special to truly free themselves of relegation.

Perhaps the man to drag them clear might be Alex Mowatt, the 25-year-old midfielder who has impressed on his return to the Championship.

Mowatt was previously at this level with Leeds United, where he excelled, but after struggling to build on a good 2014/15 season, he’s rediscovering himself at Barnsley.

The midfielder is small in stature, but important with his role on the field.

Here, during this forced postponement, we focus on the Barnsley man and look at TWO facts you might not have known…

Doncaster-born

Despite coming through the Leeds academy and supporting the Elland Road club through his youth, Mowatt was in fact born in Doncaster.

Yet, his early career led him to Leeds, where Mowatt developed and eventually broke into the first-team in 2013.

As mentioned, he enjoyed a brilliant 2014/15 campaign, scoring nine goals, with Mowatt thriving under the management of former academy boss, Neil Redfearn.

Leeds United recognition

That 2014/15 season saw Mowatt really impress, with the midfielder coming of age under Redfearn.

He scored stunning long-range goals throughout the season, with an effort in a defeat to Wolves at Molineux perhaps a standout.

At the end of the season, Mowatt had swooped the YEP’s Player of the Year, Fans’ Player of the Year and Players’ Player of the Year; true recognition for a fine campaign.
