Having already secured the services of no fewer than eight players this summer, Wigan Athletic boss Paul Cook is now looking to bolster his squad once more.

According to Sun journalist Tom Barclay, the Latics are interested in signing Sam Field on loan whose situation at the Hawthorns is also being monitored by Barnsley, Charlton Athletic and Shrewsbury Town.

Whereas the Latics have had an offer to sign the 21-year-old on a permanent deal rebuffed by the Baggies, they could still secure his services on a temporary basis by lodging a bid between now and the end of the transfer window.

Field, who was left out of the Baggies match-day squad for the club's 2-1 victory over Nottingham Forest last Saturday, was used sparingly during the previous campaign as he only given the nod on 18 occasions by previous manager Darren Moore and caretaker boss Jimmy Shan.

Although he unquestionably possesses a wide array of skills, the question still remains over his suitability for the Championship.

Here in our latest spotlight article, we determine whether Field would be a good signing for Wigan.

Despite making his debut for West Brom three years ago in a Premier League clash with Liverpool, Field has only featured in a further 39 games for the club with his game-time limited to just 1190 minutes during the previous campaign due to the presence of fellow midfielder Jake Livermore.

Although he has been given limited opportunities to express himself by the Baggies, when he has been allowed to express himself, Field has demonstrated real composure whilst on the ball as he ended last season with a passing success rate of 81%.

If he can equal or even better this ratio in a Wigan shirt, he could add some real quality to a side who flirted with relegation for the majority of the year before finally pulling clear to secure an 18th place finish in the Championship in May.

Field's willingness to make things happen in the heart of midfield can be traced to the 196 forward passes that he completed for West Brom yet it could also be argued that he also has a great deal to offer in a defensive capacity,

Whereas the fact that he only won 41% of his aerial duels suggests that he needs to improve this particular facet of his game, he proved to be a tough man to get past last year as he was victorious in 57.4% of his defensive duels.

Whilst Field is more of an out-and-out central midfielder instead of an anchor-man, his versatility could make him a huge asset for Cook who will be able to call upon him to cover when other Latics players are either injured or suspended.

Given that Field is a player who has an abundance of talent at his disposal, it may be worth Wigan taking a risk on him and thus they should do everything they possibly can to convince West Brom to lend him to them.
