Lee Bowyer continues to do an impressive job under very difficult circumstances at Charlton Athletic with the Addicks still in the hunt for promotion.

Despite a 2-1 loss to fellow promotion chasers Barnsley last time out, Bowyer's troops remain in the top-six as we pass the half-way point in the League One season.

But Doncaster Rovers sit just one point behind them, ready to leap-frog the London club into the playoff spots and bump them out of them in the process.

They welcome Walsall to the Valley on New Years Day and will need their top men firing on all cylinders to set the tone for the remainder of the season.

Karlan Grant and Lyle Taylor have both been on brilliant form in attack, with 21 goals being scored between the pair already whilst the likes of Joe Aribo and Jason Pearce continue to impress further back.

But how should they line-up in their first test of 2019?

Here's what we think...

Jed Steer will continue in goal.

He has been reliable if unspectacular so far but it can not be underestimated how important reliability can be at a club like Charlton.

Dijksteel should also retain his spot.

Much-like steer, the Dutchman has been a reliable presence on the right side of defence, remaining solid at the back and useful in attack.

The Addicks' partnership at the back has been one of their brightest points this season.

Bauer forms one half of that and it would be baffling to see him dropped for the visit of Walsall tomorrow.

Pearce should also play.

He was withdrawn with an ankle injury against the Tykes but from Bowyer's post-match comments you get the feeling he will be ready for the Saddlers.

With Chris Solly and Lewis Page both sidelined through injury and suspension expect to see the young centre-back fill in.

Stevenson has only appeared twice in the league this season but with no other option it is likely to fall to him.

Moving into midfield and at the base of Bowyer's preferred diamond should be Bielik.

Turning the big centre-back into a midfield enforcer was a masterstroke from the manager and one he will continue with.

In central midfield expect to see Pratley continue.

Joe Aribo remains sidelined so the 33-year-old's experience is most likely the best possible replacement.

Partnering Pratley will be Marshall.

This will complete an experienced and solid trio in the middle of the park that will allow the Addicks' attacking prowess to shine.

Reeves will continue in attacking midfield.

The 27-year-old is yet to hit the heights expected of him at the Valley but remains their best available creative option in that number ten role.

No prizes for guessing the front two.

Grant has probably been the club's player of the season so far and outscoring Lyle Taylor is no mean feat.

Bowyer should be keen to see this partnership flourish as much as possible.

Looking to overtake his team-mate will be Taylor.

The striker has delivered what was expected of him so far since arriving from AFC Wimbledon in the summer and that is goals.

Himself and Grant are the main reasons the club are in such a promising position.
