Djed Spence has responded to reports linking him with a move to Tottenham Hotspur, describing them as 'flattering'.

The full-back has burst onto the scene for Middlesbrough after establishing himself as a first team regular at the Riverside Stadium.

Spence is yet to be on the losing side since making his debut, and has since gone on to make eight appearances for Jonathan Woodgate's side.

Reports from the Evening Standard suggested that Spurs could be considering a move for the defender, with Jose Mourinho said to be a big fan of the full-back since his days in the Fulham academy.

But asked about the links to North London, Spence was keen to remain focused on performing for the Teessiders.

Quoted by Teesside Live, he said: "Of course it is flattering to read that stuff (linking you with big clubs).

"It is a good feeling,

“But I just need to stay focused. I want to play well and stay focused and not let all that get to me.

“I’m just a young footballer and I need to keep doing what I have been doing.

“I just want that to carry on and to keep going forward, keep learning, keep playing.”

The verdict

Of course Djed Spence will be flattered by the reported admiration of Jose Mourinho, but it's crucial to stay focused.

The full-back has made just 8 first team appearances which means that he still has an awful lot to learn before he's ready to think about the next step of his career.

His contract situation at Middlesbrough is a concern, but Spence needs to keep his head down and focus on improving for Middlesbrough.
