Sunderland will have an opportunity to quickly put Saturday's defeat to Shrewsbury Town behind them on Tuesday night, when they travel to Oxford United in the fourth round of the Carabao Cup.

Having already upset two Premier League sides in the form of Burnley and Sheffield United in this competition this year, the Black Cats may be confident of extending their cup run, although they will have to be wary against an Oxford side that thrashed West Ham 4-0 at the Kassam Stadium last time out in this particular tournament.

As well as a place in the quarter-finals - and a potential money-spinning tie against one of the big Premier League big boys - this match also gives Sunderland manager Phil Parkinson the chance to pick up his first away win in charge of the club, following defeats on the road to Wycombe, and the aforementioned loss to Shrewsbury, in his first three games since taking over.

Here, we've taken a look at the starting XI Parkinson could field against Oxford to pick up that win.

Speaking in his pre-match press conference ahead of the match, Sunderland assistant manager Steve Parkin confirmed they will look to find a balance between giving opportunities to every player in their squad, and fielding a lineup strong enough to secure progression, which we imagine will take the same 4-2-3-1 shape Parkinson has employed in all three of his games so far.

One part of the pitch where there will definitely be a change is in goal, where Jon McLaughlin will replace Lee Burge, just as he did at half time against Shrewsbury when the summer signing from Coventry picked up a hip flexor injury.

We also imagine there will be changes in defence, where Laurens De Bock could be given a chance to impress Parkinson for the first time, after the Sunderland boss revealed last week that the Leeds loanee is 'not too far away' from a return from injury.

Elsewhere in the backline, Tom Flanagan could come in to give Joel Lynch a break after all three games last week, although Jordan Willis ought to remain in order to ensure there is still an established presence in the back four, something the 25-year-old has certainly provided since his move from Coventry in the summer.

In holding midfield, Max Power is another who could be in line for a break after a busy few days, with Grant Leadbitter an experienced option to come in alongside George Dobson, who scored his only goal so far this season in the win at Burnley earlier in this competition.

Having played all three games last week as he steps up his return to regular action after that long spell on the sidelines, Duncan Watmore should also have earned a rest, with Benji Kimpioka - who has seemingly been given a way back into the side under Parkinson from the bench recently - an option to show what he can do from the start on Tuesday.

With Aiden McGeady's suspension for five yellow cards earning him a break from the win over Tranmere last Tuesday, he should be fresh enough to ensure Sunderland have a well-proven attacking threat on the pitch at the Kassam Stadium.

That is something which should also be offered by Luke O'Nien and Marc McNulty, the latter of whom could benefit from the apparent desire to give every player in this side a chance at some point, with the Reading loanee another who has yet to start a game under Parkinson.
