It is looking likely that Sunderland will be playing League One football next season, with Chris Coleman’s side really struggling in the Sky Bet Championship.

Despite some improved performances in recent weeks, it looks unlikely that Sunderland will pull themselves clear of trouble, with even the most passionate supporters admitting that a League One campaign is on the horizon.

Coleman will face a huge summer transfer window at the Stadium of Light, as he looks to rip apart a squad that has failed miserably and turn the club’s fortunes around next season.

With Sunderland’s transfer budget unclear, Coleman will have to be savvy with his dealings, and one player we believe could be targeted is Jamie Mackie, who is the latest feature of our FLW Spotlight:

Mackie will become a free agent in the summer, with the forward set to end his association with Queens Park Rangers at the conclusion of his current deal.

The 32-year-old forward has featured on 19 occasions this season for Ian Holloway’s side, scoring four goals.

The busy forward has an average of 1.6 shots on goal every time he takes to the field, with a 41% shooting accuracy.

In possession, Mackie has made 11 key passes in his 19 appearances, with his passing success rate at 78.1%.

The Verdict

Sunderland will have to be shrewd with their business in the summer, and free agents could well be targeted again.

If that is the case, a player like Mackie could be perfect, with the forward sure to bring experience and quality to Coleman’s squad.

Stepping down into League One could be perfect for the departing QPR forward.
