Kenny Jackett’s Portsmouth side have started the season really poorly in League One and the pressure is surely mounting on the 57-year-old coach.

After making the play-offs last season, the South Coast side were amongst the favourites for promotion this season but are languishing down in 20th with just one league win so far.

They do, however, have two Championship scalps to their name already in the Carabao Cup, beating Birmingham City and QPR, and now face a meeting with Southampton in what should be a fiery South Coast derby.

The two sides have not met since 2012 and Southampton have not registered a victory against their South Coast rivals since January 2005.

However, the Saints have had fared better in recent years and have established themselves as a top-flight team after being promoted in 2012.

They have made a reasonably positive start to the season under Ralph Hasenhüttl and results against Sheffield United, Brighton and Manchester United have helped them to 13th in the Premier League.

The two sides meet this evening at Fratton Park in a game that could be huge for Jackett. A win for his side could kick-start their season, while a big loss could spell the end of his tenure.

With that in mind, here is the side that the Pompey boss should field tonight against Southampton.

Craig MacGillivray has featured in every single minute of every single game for Portsmouth this season and I can’t see that changing against the Saints. Given the quality of the Premier League side's forwards you feel it could be a testing evening for the Scottish goalkeeper.

Ahead of him, Christian Burgess is a key player at the heart of the defence and he looks likely to partner Ollie Hawkins, who put in a pretty solid display against Wycombe Wanderers on the weekend despite being a striker by trade. James Bolton and Brandon Haunstrup also look set to reprise their roles at full-back.

There have been some fitness concerns about captain Tom Naylor and with an eye on the game on the weekend, I can't see the 28-year-old making it. Expect to see Ross McCrorie alongside Ben Close in holding midfield.

Attacking midfielder Marcus Harness been excellent since joining in the summer, providing three goals and one assist, but will miss the game due to injury. Ronan Curtis and Andrew Cannon look set to start as part of the attacking midfield three but in Harness’ absence, the Pompey boss may look to shake things up.

18-year-old Leon Maloney produced a really impressive display from the bench in the EFL Trophy against Crawley and this could be a fantastic opportunity for Jackett to give him his first start of the season. The teenager scored 16 goals for the academy side last season and he has a fearlessness that could be really useful against the Saints.

John Marquis has not really found his goalscoring form since arriving from Doncaster Rovers in the summer, finding the net just twice, but with Ellis Harrison suspended he is the League One side’s best option.
