Wigan Athletic will go in search of a much-needed win on Tuesday night, when they host Sheffield Wednesday at the DW Stadium.

A 2-1 league defeat at Swansea City last time out means it is now just one win in their last 17 games in all competitions for the Latics, who are 23rd in the table, five points from safety, meaning they are in danger of being cut adrift of safety if they do not start picking up points soon.

Wednesday, meanwhile, are tenth in the second-tier standings, four points short of the play-offs, with their quest for a top six spot meaning they cannot be sympathetic to their hosts, making this a tricky looking challenge for the Latics.

Here, we've taken a look at the Wigan XI that manager Paul Cook could name in search of a vital three points on Tuesday night.

Having used a 4-2-3-1 formation for much of the season so far, we imagine it is that system that Cook will elect to use once again on Tuesday night.

In goal, first-choice 'keeper David Marshall ought to remain between the posts, having looked a reliable figure for much of the season so far for the Latics.

With on-loan Chelsea right-back Dujon Sterling said to be "touch and go" due to a recent illness, Nathan Byrne - who opened the scoring at the Liberty Stadium last time out - should retain that position in what could once again be an unchanged back four, with AC Milan's recent reported interest in left-back Antonee Robinson yet to materialise into a confirmed move.

Further forward, although Anthony Pilkington and Josh Windass are still doubts through injury, Joe Gelhardt looks set to be available again after illness, and it could be worth considering bringing him back into the side behind the striker, which would allow Joe Williams to drop back into a more familiar holding midfield position, alongside captain Sam Morsy following his stint in the number ten position at Swansea.

It is possible that that striker Gelhardt finds himself playing behind against the Owls is Kieffer Moore.

The summer signing made his return from a calf injury as a second-half substitute during that defeat in Wales, meaning that with several more days worth of recovery under his belt since then, he could now be in line to make a return to the starting lineup on Tuesday night.
