16-goal forward close to Middlesbrough exit as La Liga trio circle

The La Liga trio of Espanyol, Girona, and Leganes are holding talks with Middlesbrough’s Cristhian Stuani over a potential move this summer, reports TEAMtalk.

The 30-year-old moved to the Riverside Stadium back in 2015 and proved his worth to the Boro faithful in his first season at the club, bagging seven goals and an assist to help Aitor Karanka’s men achieve promotion to the Premier League.

However, things didn’t go so well for the Uruguay international last term, as Stuani managed just four goals in only 23 Premier League appearances for the North East outfit as they failed to stave off relegation, taking his overall tally to 16 goals in 66 games for the club.

And it appears that his time at the Riverside Stadium could be coming to an end, as reports suggest that former club Espanyol, as well as Girona and Leganes, are in discussions with the 30-year-old about a potential move this summer.

Stuani’s ex-employers Espanyol, with whom he scored 29 goals in 117 games, finished eighth in La Liga last term and just seven points adrift of a European spot, and boss Quique Sanchez Flores will likely be targeting that place but reinforcements are probably needed to get there.

While Leganes narrowly avoided the La Liga drop last term, finishing four points ahead of the bottom three, and thus need to bolster their ranks to climb the division next time round, and Girona secured promotion to the top-flight, and as with any side going up a league strengthening is vital in their quest to stay there.

Nonetheless, it remains to be seen if any of the aforementioned trio are able to get a deal done for Stuani, but what does seem clear is that his two-year stay at Middlesbrough is likely to end this summer.
