Wigan are finally close to signing Portsmouth's Jamal Lowe, with the winger travelling up north to finalise a move to the Championship side.

The 25-year-old, who scored an impressive 15 goals from out wide last season, has been a target for the Latics all summer but Pompey have rejected offers that fell below their valuation.

However, there has been a breakthrough on that front now, with the Portsmouth News revealing that a deal in the region of £2.5m has been sorted between the clubs, with a medical now set to be scheduled.

His loss will be a major blow for Kenny Jackett and the team, however the chance for the former non-league player to play in the second-tier is a massive appeal and he will also be working under the man who brought him to Fratton Park from Hampton & Richmond in Paul Cook.

Providing this goes through, it will be the second major departure from Pompey this window after centre-back Matt Clarke left for Brighton in a deal that could be worth £5m.

The Verdict

This is a major setback for Pompey ahead of the new season, although deep down most fans probably expected it given the amount of interest in Lowe over the past few months.

Failure to win promotion meant it was always going to be tough to keep hold of their better players and there's no doubt that the wide man deserves a chance at a higher level.

So, all the south coast side could do was concentrate on getting the best fee possible and this is a decent amount for a League One side.

Now, they need to back Jackett in the market and let him use the funds from this sale to add to his squad before the deadline.
