Cardiff City announced the signing of three players yesterday, and amongst them is Will Vaulks.

Centre midfielder Vaulks signed from Rotherham United for a reported £2.1million, potentially rising to £3.5million, on a three-year deal, according to the Yorkshire Post.

The 25-year-old was the player of the season for the Millers and rather than try and get promotion back to the Championship with Rotherham has decided to try and get promotion to the Premier League with Cardiff.

But is Vaulks ready for challenging the top ends of the Championship? He had a good season last year and earned himself a Wales cap - but can he help get Cardiff promoted?

We breakdown his stats and see whether he is a good signing for the Bluebirds.

For a defensive minded midfielder, seven goals is a really impressive return. He is the joint second top goal scorer in the Championship for Rotherham. Cardiff struggled for goals in the Premier League last year, so having a centre midfielder who can finish will be really beneficial for the club.

Assists wise, Vaulks has got comfortably the most within the Rotherham squad and has the joint 19th most in the league. Again, for a defensive minded midfielder, that ability to play through balls and crosses is a really useful tool for Cardiff.

Vaulks has the highest shot per game average for Rotherham at 2.3 game. This shows he has no qualms is having a dig from anywhere on the pitch. He is a constant threat from deep and gives opposition defenders something to worry about.

Again, averaging four aerial duels per game is really impressive for a player who plays in midfield and is less than 5'11''. He has the best in the team for a centre midfielder, and this shows he is naturally a strong person and has a good jumping ability.

Vaulks averages 1.5 key passes again, and unsurprisingly, that is the second highest within the squad. It is less than fellow midfielder Joe Newell, but it still makes him a threat with the side, and it is the joint 32th best average in the league - which isn't bad for a defensive midfielder.

His pass success rate sits at 64.3 per cent is actually a lot worse than his fellow centre midfielders at Rotherham. This is perhaps surprising for the centre midfielder, who has been leading all of the charts prior to this. It suggests that Vaulks may not always prefer the easy option for a pass, and that his passing accuracy can be improved.

The Verdict

Vaulks had a great season last year, and bringing him to Cardiff is really good business.

For a deep-lying midfielder, he has immense qualities going forward, and is the kind of player who doesn't really have too many weaknesses.

He's a hard worker with a really good passing range, good anticipation levels and a powerful right foot. He has the ability to score from outside of the box, has a good free-kick in him and can generally offer Cardiff a lot.

It's also worth noting that he has a really long throw on him, which could suit Cardiff's big centre backs next year.

He was Rotherham's best player comfortably last year and has deserved a move to a higher Championship club - it will be interesting to see how he deals with the pressure next season.
