Aston Villa have dropped their interest in Robert Snodgrass after failing to win promotion, according to The London Evening Standard.

Snodgrass is eyeing a role in West Ham United's starting line-up after learning that his loan move at Aston Villa would not be made permanent, due to financial restrictions largely limited the Villains to loan deals and free transfers.

The 30-year-old was a top performer for Aston Villa during his season-long loan spell from West Ham, scoring seven goals and adding 14 assists for team-mates to help his side finish fourth in the table.

But the West Midlands outfit were beaten in the Championship play-off final by ten-man Fulham and they have been consigned to a third consecutive season in the second tier.

As a result, they are not able to afford to bring the Scotland international to Villa Park permanently and he will have to fight for his future this summer at The London Stadium.

Snodgrass is determined to impress new manager Manuel Pellegrini in pre-season after being sent out on loan by Slaven Bilic previously.

The left-footed winger had struggled to make an impact in East London in his half-season there after joining from Hull City in a £10.2m move.

The Verdict

Snodgrass has proven this season that he still has the ability to create goals and score himself from midfield, albeit in a lower league.

For the Hammers, he is probably a useful back-up option to have, especially when they were light last year following injuries to Michail Antonio and them playing Marko Arnautovic up front - leaving no natural wingers at the club other than converted left-back Arthur Masuaku.

While the Scotsman may not be a dynamic, pacey winger, he certainly provides a threat from set-pieces and his crossing ability could produce plenty of chances for Andy Carroll and Arnautovic to get on the end of.
