It might’ve been a disappointing end to the season for Brentford in the Sky Bet Championship, but Dean Smith can look back on the 2017/18 campaign with pride following a ninth placed finish.
Brentford looked like they could challenge for the play-offs up until recent weeks, but failure to win either of their last two games of the season scuppered any chance of that.
With the season now over, we take a look at Brentford’s 2017/18 campaign in our latest FLW Spotlight:
Smith’s side finished the season in ninth, with 69 points to their name. The Bees managed 18 victories and 15 draws, losing the other 13 fixtures.
62 goals were scored over the course of the season, with 52 conceded.
Two members of Brentford’s squad, Neal Maupay and Ollie Watkins, dominate our FLW Awards.
Maupay – the scorer of 13 goals this season – claims our FLW Player of the Year award, whilst his clever effort in February’s 2-0 win over Sunderland picks up our Goal of the Season award.
Watkins is also amongst the awards, with the forward picking up our FLW Young Player of the Year gong, after a fine first season in the Championship.
The 11-goal forward also claims our Signing of the Year award.
Brentford’s Performance of the Year was undoubtedly their 5-0 victory against Birmingham City, where both Maupay and Watkins shone.
Finally we take a look at the quote of the year from Smith following a 2-0 defeat to Cardiff City: “Personally, I’d probably want my money back because the ball was probably only on the pitch for 20 minutes.”
