Millwall maintained their unbeaten start to the new season with a first win of the campaign this past weekend.

The Lions secured their first maximum haul with a win over Derby County after two successive draws against Middlesbrough and Blackburn Rovers respectively to start the season off.

Goals from Jake Cooper and Shaun Williams gave the Lions a two-goal advantage within 20 minutes before a late David Nugget striker hailed the deficit.

That was not enough, however, as Neil Harris’ men held on from a Rams onslaught to register a first win of the new Championship campaign.

Millwall had to be resolute at the back throughout the majority of the second half with Lampard’s men looking to steal a point from The Den.

To a man, the Lions were putting on a defensive clinic against a bustling Derby attack who gave all they could to restore parity.

Cooper typified a quintessential Millwall performance during the afternoon’s events.

There was some debate over the first goal, with the Lions’ official website reporting the defender opened the scoring with other media outlets awarding the goal to striker Lee Gregory with one of them getting the most minute of touches on from Willaims' freekick.

Regardless of the recipient of the goal, Cooper had a hand in the build-up to giving the Harris’ men an early lead being a presence in the box ahead of the ball nestling in the net.

The 23-year-old made two interceptions during the 90 minutes on Saturday, winning four aerial duels.

What was more impressive, however, was his 12 clearances as Derby searched for a way back into the game.

Cooper read the game like a seasoned professional, snuffing out any potential danger, which is highlighted in the number of times he was able to relieve pressure on his side’s goal.

Despite a pass success rate of 56/5 per cent, his valiant and mammoth efforts in the defence made him the standout performer in the Lions 2-1 win over a Derby County who have made an indifferent start to the new campaign.
