Having seen their five-year stay in the Premier League come to an end with relegation at the end of last season, Watford are now making an impressive effort when it comes to securing an immediate return to the top-flight in the current campaign.

As things stand, Xisco Munoz' side are currently second in the Championship table, having amassed 66 points from their 35 league games so far this season.

But while the Hornets' time at the top level of English football in recent years - both at Premier League and Championship level - has allowed them to complete the signings of some impressive and high profile players, there have been other pieces of business completed by the Vicarage Road hierarchy, that have been considerably less successful.

Here, we've taken a look at 11 players whose time with Watford was so brief, or brought about so little playing time, that you might not even remember they played for the cub.

Do you remember any of these?

We start this list with Andrei Stepanov, an Estonian defender who was brought to Vicarage Road by Brendan Rodgers in early 2009 to provide some defensive cover for the Hornets.

Stepanov's work however, would take that long at all, with the centre back's only appearance for the Hornets coming as an 88th minute substitute in a 2-2 draw at home to Southampton in the Championship.

Perhaps not surprisingly, Stepanov left Watford at the end of that season, going on to play in Azerbaijan, Russia - at second-tier level - Belarus and Cyprus, before ending his career in 2017 after several years playing in his native Estonia.

Another player to make just a single appearance during his time with Watford, was defender Jean-Alain Fanchone.

The left-back joined Watford on loan from Udinese during the 2012 summer transfer window, but would make just a single appearance - playing 74 minutes of a 1-0 Championship defeat to Blackburn Rovers at Ewood Park - before returning to his parent club the following January.

Fanchone would struggle to make an impact following his return to Italy, being loaned out to Nimes in his native France the season after his spell at Vicarage Road, and it is his home country where the full-back now plays on a permanent basis, turning out for SC Schiltigheim in the fourth-tier.

Another loan signing that never quite worked for Watford, was that of Marcello Trotta, who joined the Hornets on a one-month loan from Fulham during the latter stages of the 2012/13 season.

During that time, Trotta would make just a single appearance for Watford, playing 59 minutes of a 3-0 defeat to Southampton in the Championship, before returning to Fulham at the end of that loan spell.

The striker would go on to spend time on loan with Brentford - where he infamously missed a penalty to cost the club automatic promotion - and Barnsley and is now playing in his native Italy with Serie B strugglers Cosenza, on loan from second-tier rivals Frosinone.

A graduate of Watford's academy, Jack Bonham made just a single appearance for the Hornets at first-team level, and it is one that you imagine most of those associated with the club would rather forget.

Having been called up to the matchday squad on the final day of the 2012/13 season after an injury sustained by goalkeeper Manuel Almunia in the warm-up, Bonham was introduced with 24 minutes to go in place of another injured 'keeper, Jonathan Bond, but made two errors to gift Leeds a 2-1 win that cost Watford automatic promotion.

Bonham was released by Watford at the end of that season when his contract expired, and now plays for Gillingham, having joined the League One side back in the summer of 2019.

Another academy graduate for whom the step up to Watford's first-team failed to work out, was George Byers.

Having spent his youth career with the Hornets, the midfielder signed his first professional contract with the club in 2014, and made his senior career the following year, coming off the bench as a late substitute in a 5-0 Championship win over Charlton Athletic in January 2015.

Byers then left Watford when his contract expired at the end of the 2015/16 season, having failed to add to his solitary appearance for the club, and is currently playing for Portsmouth on loan from the Hornets' promotion rivals Swansea, who he joined following his departure from Vicarage Road.

There aren't many players in the world - let alone this list - who can say they scored a hat-trick past Manuel Neuer and Bayern Munich, but Dodi Lukebakio is one of them.

The striker joined Watford on a four-and-a-half year deal from Anderlecht in January 2018, but made just one appearance - as a substitute in a 2-0 defeat at West Ham - before the end of that season, when he was loaned out to Fortuna Dusseldorf for the 2018/19 campaign.

Despite scoring 14 goals in 34 appearances in all competitions for Dusseldorf, including that hattrick in a 3-3 draw with Bayern, Lukebakio was sold permanently to Hertha Berlin at the end of that season, where he has since gone on to score 14 goals in 57 games in all competitions.

Park Chu-Young's time with Arsenal never really worked out, and neither did loan spell at Watford from the Gunners.

The striker made the move to Vicarage Road on a temporary basis in January 2014, but made just two appearances for the Hornets, one as a late substitute in a 2-0 win at home to Brighton, and once from the start in a 2-0 defeat at Bolton, before injuries halted his progress.

After that, Park would leave Arsenal at the end of that season, spending the 2014/15 campaign in Saudi Arabia with Al Shabab, before returning to his native South Korea to rejoin his first professional club, FC Seoul, where he has been ever since.

Having joined Watford for a reported £3million on a four-year deal from French giants Marseille back in the summer of 2016, you imagine those associated with the Hornets will have expected more from Dja Djedje than they actually got.

The defender would make just two FA Cup appearances during two years at Watford before his contract was terminated in August 2018, with Dja Djedje spending the latter half of the previous campaign on loan with Lens in the French second-tier.

After leaving Watford, Dje Djedje joined Ankaragucu in Turkey, with the 30-year-old still playing their now, representing second-tier promotion chasers Samsunspor, who he joined earlier this year.

Having already scored eight goals in 30 appearances during a spell with West Ham between 2009 and 2010, Diamanti was not a complete stranger to English football when he joined Watford on a season-long loan from Chinese side Guangzhou Evergrande.

However, the midfielder's second spell in England would be less successful than the first, with Diamanti making just three appearances for the Hornets, all of which came from the bench, before that loan spell was cut short halfway through the season, with Diamanti instead joining Atalanta in his native Italy.

The now 37-year-old would spend the next few years in his home country after his Guangzhou contract came to an end, before heading to Australia to join then-newly formed A League side Western United in 2019, where he has been ever since.

With Townsend better known for his exploits with Tottenham, England and more recently Crystal Palace, it is perhaps easy to forget that the winger was once a member of the playing squad at Vicarage Road.

Watford were one of the many clubs that Townsend would spend time on loan with from Spurs during the early stages of his career - along with the likes of Leeds, Birmingham and QPR.

However, Townsend's three appearances for Watford were fewer than he made for any of those other loan clubs, with all three of those outings coming in the Championship in early 2012, with the winger starting a win over Cardiff and draw with Crystal Palace, before coming off the bench in a defeat to Burnley.

Collins John is no doubt best remembered in England for his exploits with Fulham, where he made almost 1oo Premier League appearances for the club between 2004 and 2009.

Towards the latter stages of his time at Craven Cottage however, John would spend time on loan with Watford, making a temporary move to Vicarage Road in the 2008 January transfer window, although the striker's time with the Hornets would be relatively uneventful.

The Dutchman would make just five appearances in the Championship for Watford, starting three games and coming off the bench in two more, as John struggled for fitness before seeing that spell with the Hornets ended by a thigh problem in April 2008, with the club electing not to make the move permanent.
