Rotherham United are battling hard at the moment to try and make sure they survive in the Championship this season and avoid dropping back down to the third tier.

Paul Warne’s side have managed to put themselves in a decent position to ensure their safety with the Millers having picked up a priceless and dramatic 2-1 win at rivals Sheffield Wednesday last time out. However, matters have been complicated by their three following fixtures being postponed and leaving them playing catch up with other teams around them.

That means that Rotherham will have as many as three games in hand on some of the teams above them in the league table. Those matches could well define whether or not they get themselves out of the bottom three come the end of the campaign.

Whatever division the Millers find themselves in next term it will be vital that they enjoy a good transfer window and try and keep hold of some of their key performers from this campaign. There may well be interest in some players from elsewhere especially if Rotherham do get relegated.

That means the Millers could see some departures in the summer, but can you remember some of these less prominent players from past spells with the club.

One player you might have forgotten spent some time with the Millers is Lawrie Wilson, with the versatile 33-year-old who can play both at full-back and in midfield having spent time on loan with Rotherham during the 2014/14 campaign.

Wilson has had something of a journeyman career that has taken him to the likes of Colchester United, Stevenage, Charlton Athletic, Bolton Wanderers, Peterborough United and Port Vale. The 33-year-old has enjoyed successful spells with Stevenage and Charlton but never really reached the same heights at the other aforementioned clubs.

In March 2015 Steve Evans brought Wilson to Rotherham on an emergency loan deal that was done with the view to potentially making a permanent move for him the following summer. However, the 33-year-old only managed three appearances for the Millers and failed to really impress at the New York Stadium.

Wilson is now currently playing in National League South with Billericay Town and he has made ten league appearances for them so far this campaign.

Another very forgettable player to have played for the Millers is Mat Sadler, with the defender having spent time with Rotherham during the 2014/15 campaign in which he failed to impress at all.

The defender arrived at Rotherham in the summer of 2014 with a decent reputation having impressed during his two-season spell with Crawley Town being an ever-present for them in League One for both campaigns. There was hope then that he could make a positive impression at the New York Stadium at the start of pre-season that year when he arrived.

However, Sadler would fail to make a single Championship appearance for Rotherham and was instead limited to just a single outing in the League Cup during a defeat against Swansea City. The defender was then deemed to be surplus to requirements and was sent out on loan to both Crawley and Oldham Athletic that campaign.

Sadler was eventually allowed to leave the club and he moved to Shrewsbury Town on a two-year deal following his release by the Millers in the summer of 2015. He is now back at Walsall in League Two.

Devitt is another player who will not be remembered fondly for his impact at Rotherham with the attacking midfielder having spent a brief period with the Millers during the 2012/13 season.

The attacking midfielder started his career with Hull City and he was sent out on seven different loan spells by the Tigers during his five-year spell as a first-team player at the KCOM Stadium. One of those loan spells came at Rotherham with him arriving on an initial one month-long deal in November 2012.

However, Devitt would go on to manage to make just two appearances for the Millers before an injury cut short his time with them and he headed back to Hull for his rehabilitation. He never managed to establish himself in Hull’s side and was eventually released by them in the summer of 2013.

Devitt is currently playing in League Two for newly promoted Barrow where he is aiming to help them survive in their first season back in the Football League.

Another player who had a less than memorable loan spell with the Millers during their career was Adam Morgan, with the forward having arrived on loan from Liverpool in January 2013.

Morgan arrived on a youth-loan to try and get some first-team experience under his belt and help provide some added quality for Rotherham upfront. However, things did not really work out for him and after making his debut for the club in a FA Cup defeat against Aldershot Town he would feature just once more in the league against Barnet.

The forward has never really been able to prove himself to be good enough to play in the Football League and he has spent most of his career to date playing in non-league. Although there have been spells with Yeovil Town, St Johnstone in Scotland and also Accrington Stanley.

The former Liverpool youth player is currently with Chelmsford City, who he joined last summer.

The latest player on this list to have only spent a brief spell with the Millers on loan is former West Ham United defender Joe Widdowson, who had just a month with Rotherham back in 2008.

The defender was unable to ever break into West Ham’s first team after coming through the club’s academy, but he did get his first taste of first-team action during a one-month loan spell with the Millers in February 2008. He would go on to make three appearances for Rotherham before returning to the Hammers.

Upon his return he was sent back out on loan to Grimsby Town, who he would then join on a permanent basis in 2009. He has since had spells with Northampton Town, Bury, Morecambe, and Dagenham and Redbridge.

Widdowson is currently playing for League Two Leyton Orient where he has been a reliable performer and clocked up well over 100 appearances.

A permanent player who did not last long at Rotherham was defender Theo Streete who signed for the Millers on a free transfer back in February 2007 on a deal until the end of that campaign.

The defender would go on to make four appearances for the Millers during the latter half of the 2006/07 campaign, but he failed to ever really convince that he was worth offering a more long-term deal. Following his departure from Rotherham, he went on to join Solihull Moors for who he made over 140 appearances in four years.

After that Streete took in spells with Alfreton Town and Nuneaton Town before re-joining Solihull for one season in 2015. The defender is currently on the books of AFC Telford United where he has been since 2018.

Perhaps a little more remembered than others on this list but Vadis Odjidja-Ofoe is another player who spent just a brief period out on loan with Rotherham in the 2015/16 campaign.

The midfielder spent just one month with the Millers in September 2015 and he did manage to score one goal in four appearances before making his return to Norwich City. However, he never really managed to impress enough at Carrow Road despite clearly having some talent and ability.

Since leaving Norwich in 2016 he has gone on to play for Legia Warsaw and Olympiacos where he spent the 2016/17 and 2017/18 campaigns at respectively. He is currently playing in Belgium with Gent where he has been since 2018 and he has managed four assists in 14 league games so far this campaign.

Another player who endured a loan spell to forget with the Millers was defender Callum Kennedy, who spent time out on loan with the Millers during the 2010/11 campaign.

The defender had not been able to break into Swindon Town’s first-team in League One on a regular basis that campaign and had made only three appearances for them in the league. The decision was therefore made for him to join Rotherham on an initial month-long loan deal in February 2011.

He had a debut to forget fiving away a penalty and being sent off in a 2-1 defeat against Oxford United. However, despite that his loan deal was extended until the end of the campaign in March, but he went on to make just five appearances for the Millers during that time.

Kennedy is currently playing for Dorking Wanderers having had spells with Scunthorpe United, AFC Wimbledon and Leyton Orient since his exit from Swindon.

Yet another player who might have forgot spent some time on loan with the Millers, Luke Rooney arrived on loan from Swindon Town on a two-month ling deal in November 2012.

That came after he had failed to make much of an impact for Swindon after making a move from Gillingham in the summer of 2012. Rooney could only go on to make three appearances for the Millers during his spell with the club and he failed to score a single goal for the club.

Rooney has since gone on to have spells with Luton Town, Crawley Town and Phoenix Rising over the last few years and he is currently with non-league Chatham Town where he has been since last summer.

Another player who you might have forgotten played for the Millers, with the forward having signed a two-year deal at Rotherham in the summer of 2013.

Hylton though was never able to really impress with the Millers and he managed to make just one appearance against Brentford before being allowed to leave the club on loan to Bury on a temporary basis. He would go on to make just one appearance for Rotherham before leaving the club the following summer.

The next move for the forward was to Oxford United, where he got his career back on track and managed to score 26 goals in 85 appearances for the Us. That earned him a move to Luton Town where he still remains and he has fired in 50 goals in 130 appearances to date for the Hatters.
