The pool of players that came through the door at Elland Road over Leeds United’s 16-year stint in the Football League is remarkable.

Leeds’ tendency to move from regime to regime in terms of ownership and management in search of a Premier League breakthrough, made them one of the country’s most active in the transfer window.

Only now that Leeds are a Premier League side, you can look back and laugh at some of the players that passed through Elland Road.

With that in mind, we’ve aimed to unearth 11 players that have played for Leeds under the radar.

Can you remember each of them?

Woods progressed through the Leeds academy and had a loan with Hartlepool before making his debut as a late substitute on Boxing Day 2004 against Sunderland.

That was Woods’ last appearance in a Leeds shirt, with Sunderland actually his destination when he left Elland Road in July 2005.

Woods is currently playing in the National League with Halifax Town.

N’Goyi was a Massimo Cellino signing that arrived with little thought to what he’d actually bring to the Leeds squad.

The defensive midfielder was handed a debut against Norwich City at Elland Road, in what was his only senior appearance for the Whites.

He was an unused substitute on five other occasions, but his little impact against Norwich wasn’t deserving of another start.

One to forget.

Del Fabro’s legacy at Leeds was to be part of the Sicknote Six, but even then, he was one of the lesser known names in that debacle.

That puts his spell at Leeds into some context. He was anonymous and really is a player that fades into the club’s long history.

Some supporters given might actually remember Whitehouse as he played when Garry Monk’s side embarrassingly crashed out of the FA Cup at the hands of Sutton United.

However, that was his only appearance for the club and, like Del Fabro and players of that ilk, he will be forgotten before long and hardly become a generational flop at Elland Road.

Wilks featured in the same game that Whitehouse did at Sutton, but never built on that despite his undoubted promise at Elland Road.

Right now, Wilks is on the books at Hull City and has scored 20 goals for the Tigers in 2020/21.

He could turn out to be one that got away from Leeds.

Benedicic was another signing at Leeds made by Massimo Cellino and he was another that was a massive flop.

The midfielder made just two appearances for Leeds in the end before moving on without leaving a mark on the first-team.

Carson is currently on the books with Manchester City in the Premier League, serving as their third choice goalkeeper.

For the goalkeeper, though, it all started at Elland Road at a time when it was going wrong for Leeds United.

He made three appearances for the club as their decline kicked in and it is largely forgotten that he played for the club.

Smith is on the books with Bournemouth in the Championship right now and has made over 200 appearances for the Cherries.

Before that, he was on the books at Tottenham and had a sea of loan spells.

Amongst those was one to Leeds United in 2012 when the right-back made three appearances.

Elliott is on the books at Salford City right now and has done a good job of forging a decent career for himself.

It all started for him at Leeds, but you’d be forgiven for forgetting that.

The striker made only four appearances for the Whites, which included just one start.

Another Cellino signing.

Ajose led the line for Leeds at Millwall under Dave Hockaday, but his career at Elland Road was short-lived and his transfer into the club was a massive mistake.

He made only four appearances for the club.

The Sheffield Wednesday skipper had a loan spell at Leeds under Simon Grayson and was supposed to come in and guide the Whites into the play-offs.

He couldn’t do that in 2010/11, nor could he truly displace Neil Kilkenny from the Leeds midfield.

Bannan has gone on to do good things in the Championship, but he will not be remembered for his time at Elland Road.
