11-goal hotshot could fire Stoke back up

Last season saw Stoke struggle for goals so it is unsurprising that they are in the running for KV Oostende’s Zinho Gano.

HLN – via Sport Witness – is reporting that the forward is being moved on a year after having being brought in for £2.2 million. He would add some much-needed firepower and could prove a canny buy.

The 24-year-old scored 11 goals in 34 games for Oostende in 2017/18, as well as four in three for Waasland-Beveren before his move. This made him joint-top scorer and marked the third consecutive season that he had hit double figures. However, his high wage demands have caused the Belgian side to look at offloading the striker after a solitary season.

While not the lowest scoring of the relegated teams, Stoke’s poor showing in front of goal was a key reason for their relegation. This problem will only be exacerbated by top scorer Xherdan Shaqiri’s likely departure.

This leaves Gary Rowett with the less than intimidating forward trio of Eric Maxim Choupo-Moting, Mame Biram Diouf, and Peter Crouch. None of them scored more than six goals last season. This is also an ageing trio, with only Choupo-Moting (29) under 30.

The addition of Gano would add a flash of youth as well as fit into Stoke’s style of play. Renowned for his strength and skill in the air, he offers a threat from set pieces and is able to bully defenders. Rowett needs to breathe new life into his front line. Signing Gano would do just that.
