Bristol City confirmed yesterday that Andreas Weimann had signed a new three-year deal with the club, keeping him at Ashton Gate until at least 2024.

Robins supporters will be hoping that is the first of many positive moves this summer as Nigel Pearson looks to rebuild the squad.

The City boss has revealed that he's hoping to add five new players this summer as he looks to replenish his squad after seeing a significant chunk of it released at the end of their contracts.

Given the current national and global circumstances, money is likely to be tight and the Robins may well have to be creative.

The South West club have made use of the loan market in the past and it would be a surprise not to see them do the same this summer.

Moving for players that are out of favour at Premier League clubs can prove a masterstroke and, with that in mind, we've compiled a list of 10 that City should try to sign on loan this summer...

With Alfie Mawson returning to Fulham and both Nathan Baker and Adrian Mariappa being released in the summer, centre-back is a problem position for the Robins.

In Tomas Kalas they have a top quality Championship central defender but finding him a consistent partner is likely to be high on Pearson's list of priorities.

Björn Engels could be that player. The 26-year-old has fallen down the pecking order at Aston Villa but has experience in multiple European top leagues and would be an asset in the second tier.

With Tyrone Mings, Ezri Konsa, and Kortney Hause likely ahead of him in the pecking order, Villa may be open to letting him leave on loan.

Staying at centre-back, Leo Östigard has returned to Brighton after an impressive season on loan in the Championship with Coventry City.

The 21-year-old has never had a chance to prove himself in the Seagulls senior side and given Graham Potter has the likes of Ben White, Adam Webster, Lewis Dunk, Joel Veltman, and Dan Burn, he may have to wait a little while longer for his chance.

Pearson needs more options at centre-back and Östigard has shown he's good enough for the Championship.

It's a move that should work for Brighton as well, as you feel it may be too soon for a Premier League loan for the Norweigan.

Matt Clarke faces the same issues that Östigard does at the AMEX and the surplus of defensive talent has seen him sent out on loan time and time again over the past few seasons.

Rarely has he failed to impress and City should be in line to take advantage if the Seagulls are looking to loan the 24-year-old out again.

He's performed consistently at Championship level in the past and is likely an upgrade on the likes of Taylor Moore and Robbie Cundy, who are Pearson's other options at this point.

The only issue that City may face is if Brighton decide now is the right time to cash in on him.

The departures of Jamie Paterson and Liam Walsh among others have left the Robins slightly short of creative spark in midfield.

Signing Chelsea teenager Tino Anjorin could help solve that problem, with the attacking midfielder having shown his quality in the final third for the Blues' age-group sides.

He's struggled for regular chances at Stamford Bridge and a loan move away may be best for all parties in 2020/21.

Chelsea only have to look at the way that Tammy Abraham thrived with the Robins as evidence that Ashton Gate is a good place to send a promising player on loan, which should play in City's favour.

Teden Mengi grew into his loan spell at Derby County in the second half of 2020/21 and though there have been suggestions he could return to Pride Park, City should rival them for any potential deal.

The 19-year-old could solve Pearson's central defensive issue and would surely be hungry to use a loan spell at Ashton Gate to impress those at Old Trafford.

His quality in possession should make him an ideal partner to Kalas, who is arguably as strong defensively as any centre-back in the Championship.

Beating out former United captain and current Rams boss Wayne Rooney could prove an issue though.

Former Northampton Town captain Charlie Goode has struggled to make much of an impact at Brentford and with the Bees now in the Premier League, you'd question how much of a look in he's going to get this term.

The 25-year-old still has a long time left to run on his current deal, however, and Brentford may feel sending him out on loan is a smarter move than offloading him permanently.

Goode didn't look out of place in the Championship in the few chances he got for the Bees last season and could be a shrewd addition for Pearson, who will surely be looking to strengthen in that area.

The departure of Famara Diedhiou has left the Robins looking a little light up top, despite the return of the likes of Chris Martin and Weimann from injury.

A new number nine is likely to be top of the summer shopping list for many City fans and Ellis Simms could prove a fantastic addition.

The Everton striker impressed playing alongside Robins target Jerry Yates at Blackpool last season, scoring 10 goals in 24 games as he helped the Tangerines secure promotion to League One.

The 20-year-old is yet to feature for the Toffees and a loan move to the Championship is the logical next step after he showed his quality in the third tier.

At the other end of his career to Simms, Shane Long could prove an interesting addition for the Robins.

The out-of-favour striker spent the second half of last season with Bournemouth but didn't get much of a chance to impress.

A move to City could suit him and give Pearson the extra striker he needs after Diedhiou's departure.

Robins supporters may be frustrated by the club turning to someone clearly in the twilight of his career but Long could be a useful player to have in the squad.

This isn't one that City should be looking to spend much on, however.

As highlighted previously, adding more forward firepower is likely to be on Pearson's list of priorities this summer, and signing Keinan Davis on loan from Aston Villa could be the solution.

Ollie Watkins has proven his quality and Wesley was a big-money signing, meaning Davis may once again be starved of chances up top at Villa Park.

There's an awful lot to like about Davis as a forward and his dynamism and direct running mean he'd offer something that, outside Antoine Semenyo, Pearson doesn't really have in his striking unit.

The 23-year-old hasn't proven himself a consistent goalscorer previously but a loan move to the Championship could help him do that.

On the back of an impressive season at Wimbledon, Brighton forward Ryan Longman has been linked with a Championship move already this summer.

If he's available then City should be in the mix to sign him, given their lack of pace out wide in the senior squad beyond Semenyo and Weimann.

Longman would certainly offer them more of that, while last term he showed his quality in the final third as well – finishing 2020/21 with nine goals and five assists.

It seems Nottingham Forest are likely to be the Robins' competition if they do turn their attention to the 20-year-old and the club's links to Chris Hughton could prove an issue.
