On either side of the River Trent lies two historic football clubs in Notts County and Nottingham Forest.

Around 300 yards separate the two clubs, with only Dundee and Dundee United beating them in regards to the closest British football stadiums geographically.

Over the years, Notts and Forest have possessed a rivalry, but this has died down over the last decade following Notts' fall down the footballing pyramid.

In fact, after Notts were relegated from the EFL in 2018/19, Forest organised a collection for the staff at Meadow Lane as the ownership of the club was left up in the air.

Fast forward to present day, and the Magpies are looking to win promotion back into the Football League under Ian Burchnall.

Forest, meanwhile, are looking to end this Championship season strongly, as they look to push closer to the Premier League under Chris Hughton in 2021/22.

Here, we take a look at 10 players who have played for both Forest and County, and take a look at what they are up to nowadays...

After failing to really make an impact in Forest's first-team, Grant was sent on loan to Meadow Lane in the second half of the 2016/17 campaign.

After helping the Magpies avoid relegation to the National League under Kevin Nolan, they managed to lure him back to the club on loan for the 2017/18 season.

Grant was Notts' talisman, scoring 15 goals in 45 League Two appearances as they reached the play-off semi-finals.

Grant didn't make another appearance for Forest despite impressing on the other side of the Trent, and after flattering to deceive on loan at Luton Town and Mansfield in 2018/19, he completed a permanent move to Lincoln in 2019/20.

He's still with the Imps and has scored 15 goals in all competitions for them this season.

Another player who joined Notts in 2017/18 was Ryan Yates.

Yates had impressed on loan at the likes of Barrow and Shrewsbury Town, but it was his spell at Notts which saw him earn rave reviews.

The midfielder was a regular in the first half of the campaign, before Forest recalled him and sent him to Scunthorpe United for the rest of the season, helping them reach the League One play-offs.

Yates would soon become a first-team regular for Forest, scoring a couple of goals in the second half of the 2018/19 campaign under Martin O'Neill.

He remains a regular starter for the Reds under Hughton.

Vaughan made 111 appearances for Forest during a five-year spell at the City Ground.

Vaughan left Forest at the end of the 2017/18 season, and signed for Notts as they look to replace the experience of club captain Michael O'Connor.

Vaughan flattered to deceive, though, making 22 appearances in League Two in what was a catastrophic season for the Magpies, as they were relegated to the National League.

Vaughan left the club at the end of the season, and the former Blackpool and Sunderland midfielder is now an academy coach for Crewe Alexandra.

He was a superb player for Forest at times, but just failed to replicate those performances for the Magpies.

Laing was released by Sunderland as a youngster in 2014, and he penned a one-year deal with Forest before becoming a regular for their Under-23s'.

In September 2014, he joined Notts on loan under Shaun Derry, and his loan was soon extended until January after becoming a key member of their impressive defensive line.

He joined Motherwell in January, but after impressing in Scotland, he moved to the club on a permanent basis at the end of the season.

Laing did return to Notts on loan in 2016/17, but he failed to replicate the performances he had put in before, and he now finds himself back in the North East playing in the National League North for Darlington.

McLaughlin was a bit of an exciting addition for Forest when he arrived from Derry City for a six-figure fee in January 2013.

He became more of a regular under Stuart Pearce and made a handful of first-team appearances in the early stages of the 2014/15 campaign.

He joined Notts on loan in September 2014, scoring one goal and chipping in with eight assists for the Magpies.

He was eventually released by Forest having made 12 appearances for the club in total, and now finds himself still playing in the East Midlands, for Mansfield Town in League Two.

Gomis has been on Forest's books since a youngster, but is still yet to make a first-team appearance for the Reds.

In January 2019, he moved across the Trent and joined Notts on loan in a bid to increase his game time and help the Magpies avoid relegation.

He failed to do either of those things, making only 10 appearances for the club and failing to find the back of the net.

He joined Macclesfield on loan in 2019/20, scoring two goals in 14 games for the Silkmen, and he spent most of this season on loan at Grimsby before his loan was cancelled.

He's since been back playing for Andy Reid's Under-23s', but his future remains uncertain.

Moloney moved to Forest from Ireland as a youngster, and he moved on loan to Notts in 2009/10 after spells with Chesterfield and Rushden and Diamonds.

The right-back made 18 appearances for the Magpies as they won promotion from League Two in 2009/10, a year after making 12 appearances for the Reds.

His time at Forest came to an end in 2013 after joining Bristol City on a permanent basis.

In total he made 49 first-team appearances for the Reds and ended his career after a spell at Northampton Town in League One.

Thompson was another Irishman to come through the ranks at the City Ground.

The versatile defender played as both a right-back and a centre-half for the Reds, making over 120 appearances during a six-year spell on Trentside.

After a two-year stay at Oldham Athletic, he joined Notts County in 2009 and captained them to a League Two title in 09/10.

His time at Notts came to an end in 2011, before ending his career with two years at Mansfield Town.

He regularly commentates on BBC Radio Nottingham, and previews both Notts and Forest games for Notts TV.

We're going back a few years here, specifically to the 70s.

Needham came through the ranks at Notts and made well over 400 appearances for the Magpies during a 12-year stay at Meadow Lane.

He spent time at QPR before moving to Forest in 1977, spending five years at the City Ground and making 90 appearances.

The defender had a brief spell in Canada with Toronto Blizzard before returning to England to play for Kettering between 1983 and 1986.

He was an unused substitute in both of Forest's European Cup wins in 1979 and 1980.

Chapman rounds off our list.

The Aldridge-born defender earned a professional deal at Forest in 1964, spending 13 years at the City Ground and making over 350 appearances for the Reds.

Chapman left Forest for Meadow Lane in 1977 and spent a year at the club, before moving to Shrewsbury Town in 1978.

He did have a spell overseas with Tulsa Roughnecks on loan, before having spells with Burton Albion and Shepshed Charterhouse.

He is still an avid supporter of the Reds and lives in Nottinghamshire.
