After nine consecutive seasons in the Championship, Sheffield Wednesday will ply their trade in League One for the 2021-22 campaign.

It was a season of struggle for the Owls before a ball was even kicked, with the club being deducted 12 points for financial irregularities - a punishment that was downgraded to six points months later.

That though set the tone for a dismal eight months which saw the club go through three permanent managers and one long-term caretaker one, and despite his best efforts Darren Moore could not keep Wednesday in the Championship.

The 21st century has seen the Owls spend most of their time in the Championship with a few seasons in League One, but before that they were mainstays in the top flight of English football.

And in those years there have been certain players that seem to play well against Wednesday no matter what - let's look at 10 of those who excelled against the Owls.

He may have only played against Wednesday five times , but Rasiak has a perfect goals to game record against the Yorkshire side in his career.

The Polish striker was a real nemesis to many in the EFL and he kicked off his scoring run against the club for Southampton in 2006 when on loan from Tottenham, and then when he joined the Saints permanently in the 2006-07 season he scored once and grabbed two assists in the two games.

Rasiak then didn't play against the Owls for two years, but then came up against them for Reading in 2009, scoring three times in two matches - including a brace in a 5-0 success at the Madejski Stadium.

One of the Football League's most prolific sharpshooters in the 21st century, Austin has bagged against Wednesday for three different clubs, and it could have been a fourth if he was able to find the back of the net for QPR.

Wednesday first came up against Austin as a fresh-faced youngster for Swindon in League One, scoring in a 2-1 win at the Country Ground in 2010.

The good form continued when he joined Burnley as he netted a hat-trick at Turf Moor in a 3-3 draw with Wednesday in 2012 - his next goal against the side though didn't come for seven years as he scored in both fixtures in the 2019-20 campaign when he played for West Bromwich Albion.

Due to their relegation to League One, Wednesday will not come up against Reid this season when he plays for Fulham and looking at his record against them it's probably a good thing.

They first came across the attacker when at Bristol City in 2016, scoring once and assisting a goal in a 4-1 victory at Ashton Gate.

The same venue played host to a superb Reid hat-trick in 2018 as the Jamaica international put Wednesday to the sword in a 4-0 success.

After switching to the Premier League with Cardiff for a season, Reid returned to haunt Wednesday again with Fulham in the 2019-20 season, scoring against them in a 5-3 win for the Cottagers towards the end of the campaign and then bagged in the EFL Cup last season too, with his overall record standing at six goals in seven games.

It would be a shock if other clubs who have spent most of their 21st century in the Championship didn't have Iwelumo on their similar lists as he terrorised defenders for years.

Wednesday first felt the wrath of Iwelumo in 2003 when he was a Stoke City striker, scoring twice in a 3-2 home victory for the Potters but his next goal would come in 2006 when at Colchester United, and again that was in another win for the side he played for and that was a 4-0 drubbing of the Owls at Layer Road.

Two goals for Charlton in 2007 against Wednesday and then another brace for Wolves in 2008 meant that the only club that Iwelumo didn't score for against the Owls was Brighton, and his record of seven goals in nine outings was pretty impressive.

One of two former Wednesday players to make this list, Rhodes seemed to find the back of the net on a regular occurrence against the Owls and perhaps that is why they ended up purchasing him in 2017.

Rhodes first featured against the Owls in League One for Huddersfield, and in December 2011 he scored four times at Hillsborough for the Terriers in what ended up being a memorable 4-4 draw.

He then moved on to Blackburn Rovers and scored a goal in each of the next three seasons against the Owls, racking up two assists as well to his tally.

Seven goals in 11 matches against Wednesday over the years isn't quite topping the list but it's very respectable.

Another striker who always seemed to get the better of the Owls was Kevin Phillips, with two of the goals in his 1999-2000 European Golden Shoe campaign for Sunderland coming against them in a 2-0 victory at Hillsborough.

Wednesday didn't come up against Phillips in the league for another six years when they faced West Brom in the Championship, and he put them to the sword in both 2007-08 season games with a goal in each of the fixtures.

Phillips was a veteran by the time he joined Birmingham City in 2008 but he couldn't stop scoring against Wednesday as he netted in both league fixtures yet again that season.

After scoring for Blackpool against the Owls in the FA Cup years later, Phillips' record ended at eight goals in 13 matches - just standard procedure for a man of his talents.

Morrison signed for Sheffield Wednesday in 2010 at the age of 31 - and that was only after being a menace to their defence for a number of years.

Wednesday first came up against a fresh-faced Morrison on the final day of the Premiership season in 1998 when he was at Crystal Palace - which was his debut for the club - and he scored the winner in stoppage time, and that would be a sign of things to come.

Morrison scored three times against Wednesday for Palace in the 2001/02 First Division season and after returning to the Eagles from a spell at Birmingham City, the Ireland international scored three more times for them against the Owls.

He was less prolific for Coventry City as he scored two times in four outings but it left him with an overall record against Wednesday of nine goals in 14 matches - so you can see why they swooped for him in 2010.

With Wednesday not exactly being a strong Premier League team over the years, there were always going to be some top class strikers on here and Ian Wright is one of those.

Wright's goalscoring exploits against Wednesday started prior to the creation of the Premier League, netting his first against them in the First Division in 1992 for Arsenal.

He then scored five Premier League goals for the Gunners against the Owls, including a hat-trick in a 4-1 Highbury win in 1996 and also netted three times in cup competitions.

Even when Wright left for West Ham in 1998 he continued to find the back of the net, scoring on his Hammers debut against the Owls on the opening day of the 1998-99 campaign, ending with a record of 10 goals in 14 matches.

No surprise to see Cole here either as one of the Premier League's all-time top scorers, and his record against the Owls is exactly the same as Wright's.

Those exploits started when at Newcastle, where he scored four goals in his three matches against Wednesday before securing a move to Manchester United.

It actually took him a while to get off the mark for the Red Devils against Wednesday but he managed to do so in 1997, and then scored once in each of the next three seasons versus the Owls for United.

A move to Blackburn Rovers and Wednesday being relegated couldn't stop Cole from scoring against them - the two sides faced off in the 2001-02 Worthington Cup semi-final and the England international scored in both legs to see Rovers progress to the final.

With 13 goals in 16 matches against Wednesday, Shearer can lay claim to scoring the most goals against the club - at least in recent times anyway.

The prolific striker failed to hit the back of the net for Southampton but five goals in seven matches for Blackburn Rovers against the Owls started the good run off.

And that was extended when he moved to his boyhood club Newcastle - in six matches for the Magpies against Wednesday he scored a ridiculous eight times.

That was boosted by his five-goal haul in 1999 though, when they put the Owls to the sword 8-0 at St James' Park - that was not one of Wednesday's finest afternoons.
