The 2020/21 season was undoubtedly a successful one for Bolton Wanderers.

Following their relegation from League One at the end of the curtailed 2019/20 season, in the wake of their points deduction for entering administration, the Trotters produced an excellent response over the past 12 months or so.

Ian Evatt's side were able to secure an immediate promotion back to League One last season, after securing a third place finish in the fourth-tier standings.

That is something the club will now surely be desperate to build on in the coming campaign, as they look to et back to a level that those associated with Bolton, will feel is more befitting of their club.

If they are to do that, then you feel they will need to be solid defensively, something that historically, they have not always been able to do against certain attackers.

Here, we've taken a look at the ten players who have enjoyed the most success in front of goal against Bolton over the years, according to Transfermarkt.

We start this list with a Manchester United legend in the form of Paul Scholes, who scored eight times in 18 appearances against Bolton.

Much of the damage Scholes did to Bolton came during the 1995/96 season, early in the midfielder's career, when he scored braces in both Premier League games against Wanderers, including one double in 17 minutes after coming off the bench in a 6-0 win for United at Burnden Park, as Bolton slid to relegation.

That helped Bolton become one of the teams Scholes was most prolific against in his career, with only Newcastle United and Blackburn Rovers conceding more goals to the former England international.

Another iconic name from Premier League history who seemed to enjoy himself when coming up against Bolton, is Robbie Keane.

Like Scholes, the attacker also found the net eight times in 18 games when up against the Trotters, with two of those goals coming in a 3-0 win for Liverpool over Bolton on Boxing Day 2008, which would prove to be the last of the seven goals he scored during his brief and largely unsuccessful - a rare occurrence in Keane's career - spell at Anfield.

That return means that only West Brom (9) have conceded more goals to Keane among English clubs, with the ex-Republic of Ireland international also managing to provide three assists in games against Bolton.

Drogba made quite an impact during his time at Chelsea, and there were certainly occasions where Bolton found themselves on the wrong end of his finishing abilities.

The Ivorian is another who found the net on eight occasions against Wanderers, although he only needed 15 games to get to that tally, with the Chelsea icon twice netting braces against the club, once in a 5-1 thrashing in 2005 as the Blues set about their journey to a first Premier League title, and more importantly, in a 4-3 win over the Trotters during the 2008/09 campaign.

Remarkably for a player with Drogba's legendary desire and hunger for goals, the striker also provided an impressive six assists in those appearances he made against Bolton.

Jordan Rhodes has been one of the most prolific strikers in the Football League of the past decade, meaning that given Bolton have spent most of that period in the EFL, it is no surprise to find on this list.

Rhodes has often made a significant impact against Bolton, he netted twice for Blackburn in a 4-1 win over Wanderers early in the 2013/14, and scored the only goal of the game for Rovers in the 94th minute of a 1-0 over the Trotters the following season.

He also went on to score twice as Middlesbrough came from a goal down to win 2-1 over Bolton, again with a stoppage time winner on their way to promotion to the Premier League in 2016. In total, the now Huddersfield Town striker has scored eight goals in 13 games against Wanderers.

Like everyone else on this list up until now, Les Ferdinand has score eight goals against Bolton, but what makes his return so impressive here, is how few games he did it in.

The first time Ferdinand played Bolton, he netted twice to help Newcastle to a 3-1 win in 1995, and would score in three of the four subsequent league games he played against the Trotters, which came first in the colours of Tottenham Hotspur, and then of Leicester.

Ferdinand also netted a hat-trick for Spurs in a 6-0 thrashing of Wanderers on their way to the 2001/02 League Cup final, meaning that in total, the striker needed just six games to bring up his record of eight goals scored against Bolton, who he would go on to spend a brief spell with Wanderers towards the end of his career.

Interestingly, Wayne Rooney took quite some time to find his scoring boots against Bolton, failing to net in any of his first six games against the club, either for Everton or Manchester United.

When he did start to hit the net against Bolton however, he made quite an impact, scoring five times in two games against Wanderers during the 2006/07, as United reclaimed the Premier League title, the first of Rooney's illustrious career.

The United and England record goalscorer would net another hat-trick against Bolton in a 5-1 thrashing for the Old Trafford club during the 2011/12 season, ultimately scoring nine goals in 14 games against Wanderers, while also providing four assists.

As the Premier League's record goalscorer, it ought to be little surprise that Alan Shearer's name is another that makes it onto this list.

Shearer first significant impact against Bolton came in just his second game against the club, when he scored a hat-trick as Blackburn claimed a 3-1 win at Ewood Park during Wanderers' 1995/96 Premier League relegation season.

The 2001/02 season was also a prolific one for Shearer against Bolton, as he scored three goals and provided two assists to help Newcastle to a league double over the Trotters, with the striker ending his career with a return of nine goals in 13 games against the club.

Bent is a player who played for plenty of clubs throughout his career, and he made an impact against Bolton for several of them.

The striker found the net three times in two outings for Charlton against Bolton, albeit in one win and one defeat, while he found himself in the same situation against the Trotters for Tottenham during the 2008/09 season, scoring three times in the two league games against Wanderers, winning one and losing the other.

His finest hour against Bolton came for Sunderland during the 2009/10 season. Having scored the only goal of the game between the two on the opening day of that campaign, Bent then hit a hat-trick as the Black Cats claimed a 4-0 win in the reverse fixture, with the former England man scoring a total of 11 in 15 against the Trotters, scoring once against them for Aston Villa later in his career.

Having played 23 games against Bolton across the course of his career, it is inevitable that a midfielder with Lampard's attacking talents would have made an impact against the club.

In total, Chelsea's all time leading goalscorer - who never played against the Trotters for any other club - scored 12 goals when playing against Wanderers, which includes two braces, as well as a hat-trick in a 5-1 win during the 2011/12 season.

Only Aston Villa conceded more goals to Lampard during the midfielder's career, with the former England international also providing nine assists against Wanderers, meaning he is not a player they will ever have relished coming up against.

Right from the first time he played against them, Robbie Fowler is likely to have been a player that Bolton will have been desperate to avoid coming up against.

The attacker's first game against Wanderers saw him score four goals in a 5-2 win for Liverpool in 1995, and he would make several more telling contributions against Bolton over the course of his career. In 2002, Fowler hit a hat-trick in a 3-0 win for Leeds over Bolton, and scored a brace in a 3-1 win for Manchester City in 2004.

His final goal against Bolton earned Liverpool a 1-0 win over the Trotters in 2006, with Fowler scoring a total of 12 goals in just 16 games against Wanderers, which is enough to earn him top spot on this list.
