An interesting update emerged today regarding Bristol City and the January transfer window.

Following an unfulfilling first-half of the season with Derby County, the Robins are set to recall versatile attacker Jamie Paterson from his season-long loan spell in January according to the Bristol Post.

The 27-year-old has made 11 appearances for Philip Cocu's side but with Wayne Rooney set to arrive in the winter window, his first-team opportunities are likely to plummet quickly.

So, if he is to return, here are 1 winner and 1 loser at Ashton Gate...

Winner: Andreas Weimann

The Austrian has led the Bristol City line impressively so far this season but it has not been easy for him by any means.

The Robins remain one of the lowest goalscorers in the division and although the club are not lacking in creative players, they could perhaps do with some more competition for those roles behind the front two.

Patterson offers that. He never quite settled in one role, capable of playing in the number ten role, out wide and even alongside the main striker, so his return may well see a real surge in creativity which the likes of Weimann will inevitably benefit from.

Loser: Sammie Szmodics

For the same reasons that this move could make Weimann a winner, it definitely makes Szmodics a loser.

Signed in the summer from Colchester United, the attacking midfielder has struggled for game time in Lee Johnson's impressive midfield unit, and this latest update may well hinder him further.

Szmodics is versatile enough to play elsewhere, but Paterson has the edge on him when it comes to experience in the second tier, so may well be ahead in Johnson's pecking order.

Who knows? It could be the moment where Szmodics decides to seriously kick on, but for now it does not look like a good thing for him.
