News broke today that former Aston Villa defender John Terry was close to joining Russian side Spartak Moscow after having a medical with the club in Rome, report Sky Sports News.

The defender was due to play in a charity match organised by Stylian Petrov but had to withdraw in order to complete the deal.

The news will come as a blow to some Villa fans who had been hoping the free-agent would return to the club to sort out the clubs continuously mounting defensive woes.

Terry also teased a possible return to Villa Park just yesterday when he told the Mail Online that he had unfinished business with the club.

But it now appears that ship has quickly sailed.

So who is the big winner at Villa after any potential deal was quashed and who is the loser?

Axel Tuanzebe

The Manchester United loanee is hugely admired by Steve Bruce and, with a move for Terry off the cards, it means that more game time may become available.

Tuanzebe has been playing out of position at right-back so far this season, but Bruce's patience with Mile Jedinak must be wearing thin and a reshuffle could be on the cards soon.

James Chester

James Chester celebrates at S'Land

The big loser here is undoubtedly Terry's centre-back partner from last season who has appeared a bit lost so far this campaign without the 37-year-old next to him.

Chester clearly misses Terry's aerial presence alongside him as well as the leadership and experience he offers.

Mile Jedinak does not come close to offering any of this and that will be a blow to the Welshman.
