Fulham drew 1-1 with promotion rivals Bristol City at Ashton Gate on Saturday in what should probably go down as a missed opportunity for the away side.

Despite going behind to a poorly defended Nahki Wells header, Scott Parker's side had the bulk of possession and clear chances but were forced to wait until the 84th minute for a well-placed Tom Cairney eqauliser.

The results leaves them six points adrift of the automatic promotion places with just nine games to play, ahead of matches against Brentford and Leeds United in the next 10 days.

Here, we look at one good thing and one bad thing to come out of Saturday's match.

Tom Cairney hits top form

This was a really impressive performance for Cairney, who has been a consistent and important player for Fulham for a few seasons now.

While his equaliser was a lovely example of his tremendous ability, it was his overall impact that really set him apart, with his three key passes and four completed dribbles illustrating how involved he was in build-up play.

Some fans have gone as far as suggesting that Scott Parker's approach does not suit Cairney, but Saturday's evidence shows just how big an impact the Scotland international can still have in this team.

Errors at crucial moments

Despite having 57.2% of possession and 19 shots, Fulham made mistakes at crucial junctures in the game and it cost them what would have been an important three points.

Bobby Decordova-Reid was particularly responsible, with the attacker missing at least three good opportunities, while their defence was simply not good enough for Wells' opener.

For the goal, there were two occasions when the ball could have been cleared away, but Fulham were hesitant and eventually it fell to one of the Championship's best finishers and he did not miss.

If Fulham are going to close the gap on the top two, they must cut out the errors.
