Sunderland are sure to have a very busy end to the window, with Jack Ross on the lookout for a new number nine to spearhead their promotion push.

The ex-St. Mirren boss wanted a new striker anyway, but that need increased after it was revealed that top scorer Josh Maja would be leaving for Bordeaux.

Whilst that's a massive blow, the £3.5m he should bring in will allow the club to be active over the next week or so.

And, here we look at two players that have been suggested as potential signings - Reading's Marc McNulty and Wigan's Will Grigg.

Firstly, Grigg, who the Black Cats have been chasing all month. As our graphic shows, he has struggled to make an impact this season in the Championship.

But, you can't underestimate the difference between the second and third tier in English football and the ex-Brentford man is lethal in League One.

As well as that, many of his appearances this season have been from the bench, so the stats are slightly misleading.

Where he does impress though is his ability to win aerial dues and get shots off. As mentioned, many of those appearances would've been as a sub and he has limited game time but he clearly still is a presence.

When you also take into consideration that Wigan are struggling in the Championship, his goal return is respectable and he should get a lot more service in League One.

McNulty has had similar struggles with the Royals since making the step up but his stats show that he doesn't have the same instincts around the box as Grigg.

His one goal and lower attempts and aeriel duels won prove that he is a player who does more work away from goal, which is also reflected in his increased passing accuracy.

There's no doubt he would score in the third tier, but is he the type of striker that Sunderland need?

It's all about winning promotion as soon as possible for the Black Cats and whilst both of these could do a job, Grigg looks the safer bet to secure an immediate return to the Championship.
