After dropping out of top-flight football with Spurs, Kane Vincent-Young could have been forgiven for thinking the only way was down.

He didn't make the grade with the club he served his youth career with and ended up at Colchester United via Banbury. He impressed in League Two, making 98 appearances in the basement division for the U’s.

That earned him a move to Ipswich Town over the summer. The Tractor Boys are looking for an immediate return to the third tier and already had a squad of players from that level with which to make their move.

Singing Vincent-Young from a level below might have been seen as a risk, but as our latest spotlight piece explores, he could turn out to be one of the bargains of the season.

The 23-year-old full back has slotted into the Ipswich set up with ease and looked as comfortable as ever this weekend. He managed to score in their 4-1 win against Tranmere, a game that had been billed as the James Norwood fixture, with him facing his former club.

Instead of Norwood, it was Vincent-Young who stole the show, scoring a virtuoso fourth to get the fans on their feet. His mazy run and smart finish topped off what was a tough afternoon at times for the home side, even though the scoreline suggests otherwise.

Paul Lambert has hailed his summer signing already this month and it was easy to see why. His goal certainly caught the eye, although it would be fair to say he didn’t quite get up and down the line as much as they might have liked; he didn’t deliver a single cross all afternoon.

That’s perhaps picky as he had a great time for 90 minutes other than that one little side issue. His passing was very good, 78% of his balls found their way to a teammate, linking play and building attacks.

He’s an exciting figure on the ball too. He made six dribbles during the game with a success of 67%. He’s still young and has a pace and directness that comes with that youth. It’s fair to say he frightens opposition players with his acceleration and will only continue to improve.

He also made five progressive runs, proving that he’s got an eye for an attack and is going to be key in carrying the Blues forward over the coming weeks.

Ipswich have set the early pace in League One and they’ll expect to do the same throughout the season. With their blend of Championship experience and exciting youth, they’re going to trouble lots of teams.

However, of all the talent they possess, if Kane Vincent-Young carries on in the same form, he’ll be the one that shines brightest.
