Cardiff City manager Neil Warnock has admitted that the club could listen to offers for goalkeeper Neil Etheridge between now and the end of the summer transfer window.

Etheridge joined Cardiff from Walsall in the summer of 2017, helping the club to promotion from the Championship in his debut season in Wales, although he was unable to prevent them suffering an immediate relegation out of the Premier League last year.

There are still two years remaining on the Philippines international's contract at the Cardiff City Stadium, but speaking after the Bluebirds friendly win over Nice on Saturday, Warnock told Wales Online: “As I’ve said before, we’ll listen to anything, I’ve not heard anything and I don’t think Neil has."

So would Cardiff be right to listen to offers for Etheridge?

Here, we've put the spotlight on the goalkeeper's performances for the Welsh side during their relegation from the Premier League last in order to get a better idea of the answer to that question.

Interestingly, despite the fact that relegation meant that Cardiff's season as a whole was far from what they would have been hoping for, the performances of Etheridge as an individual are likely to have done the goalkeeper's reputation plenty of favours.

The first thing that stands out when you look at these stats is that in spite of Cardiff's relegation from the Premier League, Etheridge actually conceded fewer goals on average each game than he was expected to, which appears to be a testament to the quality and frequency of the saves that he was able to make for the Bluebirds throughout the course of the campaign.

That sort of record is particularly impressive given the context in which it was produced, and there does seem to be one indicator as to why Etheridge himself enjoyed such an impressive campaign last year.

With over 60% of the goalkeeper's saves needing him to use his reflexes, it is clear that the 29-year-old has the reactions and agility that were required to keep Cardiff - written off by so many before the campaign had even begun - in with a chance of survival right up until the final weeks of the season.

Indeed, it is arguably no surprise how admirable Etheridge's record ended up being come the end of last season, given that the goalkeeper was having to face over five shots per game, meaning he should be pretty much ready to face whatever is sent at him in the Championship should he remain with Cardiff for the coming campaign.

One area where Etheridge perhaps falls slightly short however is in his distribution, where a long pass success rate of little more than 60% arguably means that Cardiff are perhaps not quite benefitting quite as much from the attacking threat that that sort of distribution can sometimes bring.

Even so, the benefits of having Etheridge in that Cardiff side do seem to far outweigh the negatives, and given the Filipino played every league game for the Bluebirds last season, it would certainly be unfamiliar territory for whoever it would be stepping in for the 29-year-old at Cardiff City Stadium, not to mention for the defence in front of him.

You feel, therefore, that while Cardiff may well be willing to listen to offers for Etheridge unless the financial rewards of a potential deal are significantly lucrative, said offers should be responded to with an answer swiftly and emphatically in the negative.
