Fred Onyedinma was the first signing to put pen-to-paper at Luton Town this summer, and the 24-year-old justified why The Hatters moved so swiftly for him during their 3-0 victory over Peterborough United on Saturday.

Onyedinma was seemingly battling it out with fellow new signing Carlos Mendes-Gomes for a starting spot for Luton's opener, but it was the former Wycombe Wanderers man who got the nod.

Receiving the ball short from a corner half an hour into the game, the winger made enough space to stand up a cross for the towering Elijah Adebayo to nod home.

Onyedinma doubled his assist tally in the game and for the season in the 68th minute, following an excellent, direct run from the summer signing, before teeing up Harry Cornick to slot home.

The 24-year-old then got his name on the scoresheet three minutes later, blasting into the top corner from close range after his first effort was denied by Christy Pym.

It was not just Onyedinma's goal contributions that made it such an excellent competitive debut. He posed a constant threat on the left wing all game, with his jinking runs and close control causing havoc for Posh's defence.

The wide man completed seven successful dribbles out of ten against Posh - a figure he was unable to match in every game of last season.

Onyedinma also recorded three shots on target and held an expected goals figure of 1.32 - numbers Luton's summer signing was also unable to achieve in a Wycombe shirt.

Nathan Jones has made a big point about recruiting athletic players this summer, and Onyedinma certainly fits the bill. Not only did the 24-year-old show athleticism when marauding forward, but he displayed this out of possession too.

Saturday's Man of the Match made four interceptions during the 82 minutes he played, surpassing his average from the previous year that stood at 2.44.

Despite his tendency to take attacking risks and forward-thinking nature, Onyedinma still possessed a high passing accuracy percentage 0f 79% - another high figure given his average from last year was just over 70%.

Onyedinma enjoyed an excellent debut for Luton Town, and the statistics certainly back that up. If he can put in similar performances consistently throughout the season, then The Hatters should enjoy an exciting year.
