Leroy Fer is back in the Championship after two years with Swansea City.

Their relegation means the midfielder suffered his third relegation from the top flight.

He came out in 2014 with Norwich, in 2015 with QPR and now in 2018 with Swansea City.

He might be considered something of a bad luck charm, if you were that way inclined.

Despite this, he's only made 20 Championship appearances in his career, one with Norwich before a move to QPR and 19 with Rangers before switching to Swansea.

This time, he'll be expected to perform a few more times as Swansea hunt an immediate return. Do his stats suggest he's going to have an impact? A FLW spotlight reveals all.

Fer played 20 times for Swansea as they came down, scoring once and assisting once. They're not great numbers from the 28-year old, capped eleven times by the Netherlands. Then again, Swansea weren't exactly on fire themselves. The numbers could be as much a product of the environment as they are a reflection of his impact.

The other numbers are less than breathtaking though. He's a powerfully built central midfielder, 6ft 2in tall but he only managed 2.2 tackles per game. A good midfielder is either a creator and scorer, or one who breaks up play and distributes the ball. Last season, Fer was neither.

He did make 31.6 passes per game, so he wasn't winning the ball back but he was receiving it and laying it off for team mates. That isn't a particularly high stat, but at least in a struggling team it shows he was getting on the ball and playing it again, something we consider a prerequisite of being a midfielder.

He attempted 1.3 dribbles per game too, not exactly rampaging at every opportunity, but at least displaying some endeavour.

There's nothing in his stats last season to suggest Fer will tear up the Championship. His record of relegation shows a player who doesn't influence sides in the top flight repeatedly trying to play there through transfers, not by earning it via promotion.

Swansea will need to see the player that the Netherlands thought was worth 11 caps, the player Fer can be, if he's going to tear up this division and earn them promotion.
