Sunderland have had a disastrous season and even with their late point against Middlesbrough on Saturday, relegation to League One looks a strong possibility.

It was all change in the summer, with former Leeds boss Simon Grayson appointed manager after David Moyes had taken the side down from the top-flight.

Despite most relegated sides becoming instant favourites for promotion, there was an uncertainty about how the Black Cats would do this season given the financial situation surrounding the club.

However, few expected the north east side to be in such a difficult position with 12 games to go.

That includes the board, who sacked Grayson on October 31 with the side 22nd in the table. Yet, as our graphic shows, things haven’t got any better under Chris Coleman.

Even though he had a positive initial impact, the former Wales boss now has an identical points per game record (0.89) with Grayson after the same number of games.

The one positive is that the side have won more games under the new manager but it still makes for very grim reading to any Black Cats fan.

Yet, given the performances of the teams around them, Sunderland are now in a much worse position than they were under the former Preston boss, sitting four points from safety.

Of course, Coleman can point to a very poor January window in which the club failed to recruit several key targets.

As well as that, fans will recognise that the problems run deeper than just the manager at the Stadium of Light, but it’s also clear that Coleman hasn’t had the effect that many had hoped.
