Scottish Premiership side Rangers could be set for a transfer swoop slightly south of the border this summer.

As per reports, the Scottish giants hold an interest in Sunderland striker Ross Stewart, with some even suggesting that the 25-year-old is the club's top priority this summer.

Stewart shone for Sunderland throughout the 2021/22 campaign as the club achieved promotion to the Championship via the League One play-offs.

Here, we've taken a look at Stewart's performances from the campaign in numbers to assess the sort of player Rangers could be getting.

All statistics below are from WyScout, unless mentioned otherwise.

Performance in numbers

When looking at Stewart's numbers for Sunderland this past campaign, the one thing that immediately stands out are his goal numbers.

In his 46 league appearances in all competitions in 21/22, the 25-year-old netted an impressive 24 times for the club.

Those numbers means the Scottish international averaged 0.5 goals per 90, which closely matches his xG per 90 for the season, which sat at 0.52.

Stewart also showed he can offer more than just goals though, laying on five assists for his teammates and perhaps able to do so due to his solid passing skills.

Averaging 20.23 passes per 90, his accuracy for those stood at 75.1%.

Given the fact he only averaged 1.65 dribbles per 90, it is clear that Stewart is more of a striker to receive the ball either to hold up, or in attacking areas, rather than one that will dribble with it into areas of threat.

That is further strengthened by the fact that Stewart won 45.3% of his 12.76 aerial duels per 90.

All in all, the Scottish international is a prolific goal threat when given the correct service, with fine finishing skills.

He can hold the ball up well, and wins his fair share of aerial duels, too, all things that could aid Rangers next campaign.

Sunderland will not want to let him go after such an impressive campaign, but, with just one year remaining on his current contract, perhaps a deal could be struck for the right price.
