Birmingham City will go into the summer understandably excited about what the future might hold in the 2019/20 season.

The Blues came into the last campaign off the back of a transfer embargo but still pushed impressively for the play-offs, although a nine-point deduction in February quickly ended any hopes they had of that.

Reasons to be cheerful remain numerous, anyway, although it is possible that the coming transfer window may extinguish some of that optimism.

Star striker Che Adams is highly likely to leave the club, having scored 22 league goals, with a Premier League move very much on the cards.

A replacement will therefore need to be found, but is it possible that they have the right man at the club already?

Having arrived from Luton Town back in 2017, Isaac Vassell has consistently struggled with injuries at St Andrews.

But hopes will remain that through those problems, he has managed to retain that striking ability that gave him such a positive reputation in League Two.

However, piling the pressure onto him to step up and replace a man of Adams' scoring stature would be an enormous risk.

In 14 appearances at the end of last season, Vassell showed nowhere near the quality, instincts or turn of pace that would be necessary to step-up.

He did not score once and averaged less than one shot per game. He also won less than one foul per match showing that even his hold up play left plenty to be desired.

I am not saying give up on him. But if a large fee is obtained for Adams, a good chunk of it should go towards signing a direct replacement.
