Barnsley midfielder Alex Mowatt looks likely to endure a spell on the sidelines after assistant manager Dale Tonge revealed they're still waiting for an update on his condition, as revealed in this morning's press conference.

It's unclear whether the former Leeds man is out for a short spell, or for a longer term, after he was withdrawn on 77 minutes of their defeat away at Sheffield Wednesday this weekend.

Barnsley lost the game 2-0 in front of 28,028 fans at Hillsborough, as well as enduring the injury to key man Mowatt. They're are still waiting for assessment results, but the 24-year-old is still 'struggling' and will miss this weekend's fixture against Charlton at Oakwell.

The condition of three other absentees has also been discussed by Tonge.  Jordan Green is closest to a return, he's returned to training this weekend as he continues his rehabilitation. Jacob Brown won't feature against the Addicks, although he will be back doing ball work next week.

Kenny Dougall is the furthest away. He suffered a broken leg against Doncaster Rovers in March and is a long-term absentee.

The Verdict

After the opening day win, confidence was high going to Hillsborough, but the defeat coupled with the injury to Mowatt have brought them back down to earth.

Mowatt is a key man for Barnsley, he was excellent in their automatic promotion campaign last season and he's got experience of the Championship as well.

They'll be hoping that his test results come back with some good news. He's a driving force in the middle of the park and as the transfer deadline has passed, they can't bring in a replacement.

This weekend will be a big test, Charlton have started well, putting Stoke City to the sword at the weekend after their opening day win.
