When Jamal Lowe joined Wigan Athletic from Portsmouth in the summer, it was a move that saw the winger complete his rise from non-league football to the Championship.

It was also a transfer that saw him reunite with manager Paul Cook - the man who signed him for Portsmouth in 2017 and gave him a chance to get his career back on track.

Quite a few Championship teams were thought to be interested in Lowe in the summer, including clubs that finished higher in the table than Wigan did, but Lowe seemed to have his heart set on joining the Latics and you have to imagine that Cook played a key role in his decision.

Lowe would have known that by signing for Wigan, he would be joining a club with a manager that would already know how to get the best out of him and one that would be prepared give him opportunities in the team and allow him the chance to adapt to the Championship.

However, if recent reports are to be believed, Cook is one of the candidates on Sunderland's shortlist to replace Jack Ross at the Stadium of Light and if he were to leave Wigan, it could really change Lowe's perspective.

It may not make him regret signing for Wigan, as there were surly plenty of other factors that convinced him to join the club, but he will surely hope that Cook decides to turn down Sunderland.

After scoring 17 goals for Portsmouth in all competitions last season, Lowe has struggled to make the same impact since making the step up to the Championship and has failed to score in his eleven league appearances for Wigan this season.

If Cook was to leave Wigan, there's no guarantee that the club's next manager would see Lowe as a part of his plans.

To make matters worse for Lowe, there are quite a few reasons why Cook could be tempted to leave Wigan for Sunderland.

Moving to the Stadium of Light would give him an instant chance to have another crack at the League One title and the chance to put another promotion on his managerial CV.

Even though he's under contract at the DW Stadium, he was also under contract at Fratton Park when he left Portsmouth to join Wigan, but that didn't stop him.

There are plenty of reasons why Sunderland would want Cook too. He knows exactly what it takes to achieve success in League One and should be able to get the best out of the Sunderland players.

He also has a decent amount of experience in the Championship, meaning that if Sunderland do get promoted this season, he'd know what to expect and wouldn't need time to adapt to the challenges that come with managing in the second tier.

These two factors alone could make Cook an ideal candidate for the Black Cats, which will surely have Lowe fearing the worst.

Lowe will surely be hoping that Cook will decide to remain loyal to Wigan, but he could be forgiven for fearing the worst, as he's only a few months into the three-year contract that he signed when he joined the club at the beginning of August.
