Queens Park Rangers manager Mark Warburton has revealed that he has banned his players from shooting from long-range during matches, report The Athletic.

The Rs have experienced an impressive start to the season, with Warburton deservedly receiving many of the plaudits, and he has offered an insight into his tactical approach to games.

“A speculative shot from 35 yards is not a chance,” he said.

“I learned a lot from Matthew Benham. He came from a mathematical perspective. Where is the chance? What is the probability of scoring?

“Shooting from 35 yards out, you always remember the one that screams in. You don’t remember the other 99 that end up in Row X or Row Z. You know the chances of scoring are so very slim. There’s another pass, to give ourselves a higher probability of scoring.”

With 11 matches played, the West London side currently sit in ninth place, making a rapid start to a season that many expected them to struggle in.

The summer saw them lose the likes of Luke Freeman and Darnell Furlong, whilst many of the arrivals were free agents, as well as contending with a switch in manager.

But so far it seems to be working very well for them indeed.

This weekend sees them travel to Hull City following the international break as they look to make it six wins from their last eight in the second tier.

The verdict

I think this is a really smart, really encouraging approach to take.

And he is absolutely right. If you look at the statistics, the clubs who shoot the least from long-distance will almost always end up closer to the top of the table.

The fact that Warburton is intent on ingraining the side with this notion should give the fans plenty of hope for the future and that success can be achieved under their boss.
