Blackburn Rovers are one of a number of sides interested in signing Sheffield Wednesday goalkeeper Cameron Dawson, a report from the Sheffield Star has claimed.

Dawson, a graduate of Wednesday's academy, is out of contract with the club at the end of the season, and it seems there are a number of sides who are now monitoring the 24-year-old's situation with a view to a potential move in January.

As well as Blackburn, it is thought that two other Championship sides: Derby County and Preston North End, are keen on a move for the goalkeeper, as are Scottish giants Rangers.

So would Dawson be a good signing for Blackburn?

Here, we look at two pros and twos cons to a potential move for the goalkeeper by Rovers.

Pro: It would give them cover long term in that area

Following the departure of their first choice 'keeper for the past two seasons, David Raya, for Championship rivals Brentford in the summer, Blackburn found themselves in need of a new number one.

While they eventually found that in the form of Christian Walton, the 23-year-old has only joined on a season-long loan from Brighton.

As a result, Rovers currently face the prospect of scrambling around for a goalkeeper again next summer - Walton's deal was only completed in late July, reducing the time he had to acclimatise to his new surroundings - so a move for Dawson in January could go some way to avoiding such a situation again.

Pro: It could be cheap

It is hard to escape the fact that over the past two summers, Blackburn have spent big when it comes to strengthening their squad, although that spending has been at the other end of the pitch, with striker Ben Brereton and Sam Gallagher both arriving on big-money deals.

That means that Rovers may not have quite as much left in the budget come January, particularly with the scrutiny around Financial Fair Play recently, meaning a move for Dawson may well be a smart one.

With the goalkeeper now entering the final year of his contract, Dawson would be free to walk away from Hillsborough for nothing at the end of this season, meaning the Owls could be willing to let him go for a reduced price in January, to ensure they at least get something for him rather than nothing, which may well benefit Rovers' own pursuit of the goalkeeper.

Con: There may be questions over his ability at this level

While Rovers certainly look as though they could do with a goalkeeper, there may be some wondering whether Dawson is their best option.

As it stands at the minute, the 24-year-old has made just 37 Championship appearances in his career, and it is hard to escape the fact that his only extended run in the side came when Wednesday struggled under Jos Luhukay during the early part of last season.

Rovers may therefore be wary of his comparative lack of experience at this level, particularly given that is something that has cost them already over the past couple of years, with some of the damaging errors that have been made by the likes of Raya and Walton.

Con: Will Dawson be ready to wait for his chance?

If Dawson was to make the move to Ewood Park in January, it would create something of a selection headache for Blackburn, given Walton is not due to return to Brighton until the end of the season.

The fact therefore that Walton has joined with the expectation of being the club's number one throughout the course of the campaign, means that Rovers either risk damaging a relationship with a Premier League side by dropping him for Dawson, or leaving their potential new signing frustrated by leaving him on the bench in favour of Walton.

Given Dawson has already played second fiddle to Keiren Westwood for the majority of his Wednesday career, you have to question whether he would be willing to do that again at Blackburn, particularly if one of those other interested parties is able to offer him an immediate place in their starting XI.
