Cambridge United have completed the signing of Jack Roles from Tottenham Hotspur on a loan deal until January.

The 20-year-old attacking midfielder came through the academy at Spurs and while he is yet to make his competitive debut for the club, he did feature in the pre-season games against Manchester United and Juventus this summer.

Roles was a key player for Spurs' development squad last season, scoring 13 goals in all competitions, as well as scoring two goals for their under-19 side in the UEFA Youth League.

The attacking midfielder has moved to Cambridge to experience regular first-team football and could make his debut for his new club against Scunthorpe United in League Two tonight.

Cambridge have made an encouraging start to the new season, taking five points from their opening three matches in League Two and knocking Brentford out of the Carabao Cup on penalties last week.

The Verdict

This could be a great signing for Cambridge. Roles is an exciting young player and his goal record for Spurs' development squad is very impressive.

He wouldn't be at a top club like Tottenham unless he had the potential to be a special talent and the fact that he played for the senior side in pre-season shows that he is rated very highly for the future.

With that said, he probably wasn't going to get a proper chance in the first-team at Spurs this season.

Sending him out on loan is probably the best option for his development and he could turn out to be a very smart signing for Cambridge on loan.

Roles has never been out on loan before, so it'll be interesting to see how he handles the challenge.
